I've changed/updated my desktop again, have you?

Nice picture, where is that

Yeah, I don’t like clutter. Tbh I mostly mimicked the things I liked about MacOS without the price tag, like the disappearing transparent dock. Anything not pinned there, I’m usually using terminal for.

I found this picture and love it on my desktop and my eyes are happy with it

I prefer a nice picture every 10 minutes. Variety does that for me.

Pic of view from the Greek Island Santorini. Reminds me of the time I visited there.

You cheat !

That’s the one I always use for my clients when setting up a new mint desktop

It’s beautiful, and even elegant! I like it for you too, but I’ll stick with my Garuda Dragon on my GNU/Linux desktop … at least for now,

LOL … No I didn’t. I didn’t say I took the pic. But here is one I did take.

Is that a “dock” at the bottom, or an XFCE panel?

I never liked the default XFCE bottom panel/dock - as they’re not “dynamic” like the HUD or DASH or DOCK in Gnome based DE… In the past where I’ve used XFCE I’d removed the bottom panel and run plank dock instead…

As for “price tag” - I still reckon that’s a misconception - Apple laptop (and tablet) hardware is usually of a very high quality - and - my 2021 MBP M1 (2020 model year) was cheaper than a flagship laptop from the likes of Lenovo or Dell. You can get one of the new MacBook Neo (they use an ARM core SOC shared with iPhones) laptops in Australia for under $900 AUD - and - believe it or not MacOS runs just fine on 8 GB RAM - still! And - MacOS is UNIX…

I realise that, it’s just minds across different countries settling for the same desktop image.

Sounds to me like even though we’re all unique individuals, we all share some similarities, such as a mutual appreciation for a calming image …

It’s a panel to mimic what I like about the dock; namely transparency, showing pinned apps and currently running software, and disappearing when I’m not using it. Had a wee footer about with plank, but preferred the panel overall.

Yah, the gap has def narrowed compared to ten years ago, especially in mobiles. But for a mid tier laptop, I’d still rather pay several hundred quid less for a recent Ryzen 5 than a Neo. Appreciate a student with the discount might not feel the same. Am not tied into the Apple ecosystem either though, so a lot of the streamlined benefits are lost on me. I reckon most gamers as well would rather have native compatibility for 99% games out of the box for the money.

In my case, I already have perfectly fine hardware so it was buy new device (£££) or install Linux for free.

I’ve had great luck with refurbished Dell Optiplex micro pc’s. Amazon and Newegg are two sources, pricing under $200 US.

The SFF ones are a good buy too.

Same here - got a SFF Optiplex (7080 with 10th gen i5) recently - to run headless - and host a PCIe GPU (Intel Arc A310)… The GPU for transcoding video content and streaming via Jellyfin… i.e. it’s a tiny SFF desktop - but still large enough to enable a half height PCIe card… Running Debian 13 on it…

And Jellyfin barely touches the sides - I could probably run other stuff on there too… A pair of these with 64 GB of RAM (4 DDR4 DIMM slots) would make a great VM “farm”, either ESX or ProxMox…

Spotted this aerial photo on the socials the other day - and it’s my new wallpaper (not that can usually see it) :

That’s Perth West Australia - I just got back in this morning from a fortnight in Melbourne…

With the amount of space available in WA , why do they need skyscrapers. ?
We keep building these monsterous multi-storey concrete jungles.
They cant function without air conditioning and they provide a poor enviromment for either work or living.
Dont give me an economic argument … I reckon single storey buildings spread out over half the state would have to be more economic
