I’m trying out Endeavour OS for the first time in a VirtualBox VM, and when I installed Kitty, the text was rendering strangely from the get-go. Any ideas what’s causing this?

Hi Nathaniel, and welcome.
Kitty uses the GPU to accelerate its response times.
Inside Vbox, access to the GPU would be via some virtual hardware device that is attached to the VM. … so there is some software sitting in between kitty and the GPU.
In theory, that should work, but there is lots of scope for problems.
What you might try is looking at some of the device settings in Vbox
