Linux apps on android. This is interesting

Just read the article by Android Authority saying that google is working on a terminal app to use linux on Android ( particularly debian ), in a VM. What do you think about this?

The link does not say that it does graphics, but from the look of some of the pictures it seems likely.

Google dont do half measures. If they complete it, it will be usable.

There is Termux… it provides a Linux CLI in Android devices.

Are there many linux apps to run on windows that dont exist in windows format ?
Libreoffice is available windows linux and mac just different version numbers and that carries on through most apps.

As for GUI apps, probably not many.
I think Cinelerra is such a thing, at least I did not come across a Windows build

As for CLI, I’m not aware of such useful stuff like grep, awk, sed, and generally that flexible piping functions…

I did not find a Windows build for Seafile server (I admit did not look for it very hard as I don’t care), so I think server side stuff are more easily available for Linux.

I tried KDENlive on Windows, but khhhhm… on Linux it crashed for me too often to use it, but otherwise it performed, on Windows it crashed too, and the performance was like a snail against the wind (compared to the Linux build)

These are not “many”, just few examples I can mention (and based on experience quite a few years back…).

I bet. It will be usable.
On Chrome OS (Flex), the Linux apps run in containerized Debian. It is OK for running not very demanding productivity apps, such as GIMP, Libreoffice, and the like. Demanding apps would lack horsepower, and sysadmin apps don’t work either. That’s just a normal limitation, not a dealbreaker, and I like the idea to have LO on a Chromebook, I think this will probably gain some people for Google to choose their product. I still plan to keep my own system on baremetals.

One can get R builds for Windows and Mac, as well as Linux and BSD. The R package system is designed to work on all platforms. R is semi-gui, it has graphics output. R is free on all platforms.

Quite a lot of languages are available across platform, but may not be free outside of Linux/BSD. Programming is one of the areas where Linux is most popular, and offers the best range of tools.

People have used Termux in the past to install Linux GUI apps… Not me… I only want Termux 'cause of the shell… and I run sshd in Termux and I can SSH / SCP to / from my phone from/to my desktop machines…

What it sounds like Google are doing is what the MaruOS project did - it ran a WHOLE Debian XFCE Jessie in a chroot (mostly on the Nexus 5) - but normally would only display when you plug in a slimport to HDMI adaptor - so you probably also needed a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I quite liked it. But the features of the Nexus 5 were so limiting (non-expandable storage, and limited to 32 GB) I gave up on it - and I left it running for so long - the battery swelled up and bent the chassis.

I also have a Chromebook - I run the Linux developer thingie inside it - but - once again - not interested in trying to get Linux GUI apps running there…

This Google thingie / project sounds like it would be ideal to run via Samsung Dex! i.e. Samsung actually had a Linux on Dex feature - but - they killed it… “Convergence”… i.e. your desktop machine is in your pocket and you carry it from place to place where there’s a monitor to hook it up via…

Smartphone screens are just too tiny and wonky to even consider running a Linux Desktop app on (IMHO)… I can’t think of a single use case for my purposes (unless I can do it in something like Dex).

I think 10 inch tablet might be just big enough for a Linux GUI… even then I think it would be one window at a time., like Android.

I use my tablet more now than my linux desktop due to being with me all day.

I dont really seperate and thing ooh i am using android bad boy paul, just tend to think about the work i need to do that moment or day, lets not get hung up with what we use more are we being productive with our time ? Or does it enrich our life.

Yes my phone is too small to be productive, but have sat in a few airports, hotel lounges, and even coffee bars and updated a web site on the fly so no complaints.

2 or 3 years back had to use a laptop or desktop browser to update pages ir order something but no can do everything, even if i use zoom in on text often
