Linux Gets Slower After a Few Hours

Has anyone else had this issue? My Linux system becomes noticeably slower after a few hours, but a reboot fixes it. What should I check first to find the cause?

Hi and Welcome,
Check that your /tmp fiiesystem is not filling up. Booting clears it.
Look using df … are any filesystems near full?

and
Make sure you do not have overheating. I dont think a reboot would cure overheating, so this is probably not the issue.

and
run top . Watch how much ram memory programs are using.
A program with a memory leak can choke your linux by filling ram memory and making it swap. Rebooting would clear that too.

You can also use free -h to check memory and swap usage.

Welcome to our site

Does this happen when you carry out one task such as internet browsing or is it on all applications

Does it depend on time of day

The more details you can give the better we can be in helping you

Perhaps also your version of linux and the amount of memory installed as Howard suggested

This so generic - we need more information.

What distribution are you using - and what release version…

Hardware specifications - how much RAM, what CPU? Storage? Are you using SSD or HDD? NVMe or SATA SSD?

What software are you using? A Web Browser? Is it Chromium based (e.g. Chromium, Google Chrome, Brave, Edge)? Firefox?
