further troubleshooting might prove helpful, but it looks like your nm-applet instinct might have been fortuitous. according to the lubuntu manual page on advanced networking nm-tray isn’t especially good at more advanced networking tasks. the example focuses on vpn’s but also mentions having difficulty with passwords. the last paragraph describes how to replace -tray with -applet if a body is so inclined
