Microsoft controls installation of software. Store!

Ok i know we are a linux site and all is aimed at that but… for information!

Computer came in yesterday with a virus on edge browser. User tried to install chrome but failed so was stuck could do nothing due to virus or lack of another browser.

Ok talked into linux mint no problem, but as a learning process wanted to virus scan first. Malwarebytes and adwcleaner. My usual tools.

Removed the virus as it was a extension issue on edge. No problem.

Onto Malwarebytes site download but not able to install due to microsoft store controlling installation of any software not in store.

Before you could go into control panel and apps, switch off store taking windows out of s mode. No longer an option. You have to now go into store, install remove s mode (search for it) run, that then takes s mode off and you can download from any site and install.

New computer almost never used, virus issues everywhere, Malwarebytes and adwcleaner ran a very high count and quarantined a large number, deleted them and ran the tools again, still found more. Convinced that it was impossible to return clean, so re installed windows, ran the tools again found yet more issues.

The computer is now running lmde, fast and virus free, chrome and Firefox, plus libre office for free, no paying Microsoft for word, excel etc.

Happy client

The only virus scan that can be ran in S-mode is Microsoft Windows Defender, Malwarebytes was giving a lot of false-positives in S-mode. Taking a pc out of S-mode is also a one-way-street, it is there to protect the pc, for just what you did, it makes Windows behave like a Mac!!!

That used to be the case, but no longer.

In the store is switch off and on store mode, its a recient addition to the new version of store and new update to windows h??? Something. Only just discovered it.

Although i use the linux repositories, google playstore. I have no confidence in the microsoft equivalent so happy to switch it off.

Apple apps store is ok but many things are to pay for, only time i use it i forget my account details so end up going direct to the supplier.

As for malwarebytes, been using it for years and feel confident in its ability, but never understood why the normal product does not include adwcleaner as part of it. I did ask them a few years back and did not understand the answer.
