My Next Gentoo Project

Explain how?

You edit the PATH=…
statement in .bashrc
just add :/usr/local/bin
the ‘:’ is a separator

Is this where I need to go?

I think so… is there a line beginning PATH=

If not try .profile

Not sure if you want this for root or Daniel?

No there isn’t !!!

This has the PATH=

OK it is .profile

add a line
PATH=“/usr/local/bin:$PATH”

and
those duplicate sets if lines are strange.
You could delete one set of 4 lines

and
Is this root or Daniel? It looks like Daniel from the nano header.

It is user “daniel”
What exactly will this do? A terminal start may be all I need?
This has been a very blessed Thanksgiving Day!!!

I will enable Daniel to find binaries that are in /usr/local/bin
So you should not need that symlink

Try Daniel first. It is best not to give root too many PATHs

When you do it, it will not activate until you start a new shell, or reboot.

There is nothing wrong with your symlink, this is just another way to do it.

We dont have Thanksgiving Day. It is an American thing.
I think we should. It is the right sort of sentiment. The world needs it.

Afterthought:
Because it is in .profile, it might need a new login shell to activate it.

Grub Customizer startup is located in the Mate Control Center. If I want to, I can right click and add it to the application menu, problem solved!!!

I now have my Surfshark VPN installed on Debian 12!!!
Kept losing my bios settings, but a cmos battery change fixed the issue.
I would have preferred to be running Gentoo but Debian 12, so far, has been much
easier to maintain and setup.

This post has been, a kinda walk-through, as to what and how, it takes to update and run and use, an old machine, like this Dell Inspiron. Although this machine was setup, to my personal specs, I do realize, that it could be, ran as a Linux-only setup, but for myself, that serves very little function whatsoever.
The old machine is running well and will serve my needs for quite sometime.

I am a bit concerned about you using grub customizer.
I think you can manage it, but I would be cautious about
advocating it for general use. It can make a real mess of your
grub config files.

Yes I am very much aware of the dangers of using Grub Customizer and I would never advocate for anyone to be using Grub Customizer. With this old machine, if something goes wrong, it will be no big loss. Sure I could have built a Linux-only machine, but to be honest, I do not need a Linux-only machine.
All that aside, the old machine is running well, XP and Debian.

Someting a bit smaller than Debian may help… Tinycore or
Porteus or Antix?

No matter what Linux I use, I would still have the same issue with the dual boot with XP. My VPN installs well in either Ubuntu or Debian. Will leave it with Debian, for now, and see how it runs.
