I need some help. I can not support Spotify anymore and been wondering if you guys had any ideas?
Dunno - but streaming URLs mostly work in MPV and VLC…
I haven’t tried radio streams from the public cloud… I have 1.2 TB music collection - so I’ve always got something to listen to…
I use mpv on Ubuntu to stream Free-To-Air TV from my RaspberryPi running TVHeadEnd (it has a Sony TV tuner adaptor mounted - and that’s wired into my rooftop antenna) and both my TP-Link IP security cameras…
I think @Rosika uses mpv to stream stuff too (can’t remember if it was TV or just audio streams).
I think Sayonara (this is the Linux music player I use all the time : http://sayonara-player.com) can do streaming as well… out of the box version 1.8.0 it supports SoundCloud and SomaFM…
For listening online radios, like Radio Swiss Jazz, I just open the URL in Audacious.
This is just an example, online radios usually have a playable URL.
If Spotify would stop, I’d try probably Deezer. They don’t support Linux though.
There’s an app for Linux anyway:
I have no idea wether it works?
What’s the problem with Spotify? I still like it, however I know it’s going to be more expensive next month…
Perhaps my tastes are different, but normally I go through google to the radio station web site and just click to listen live. No software needed google does it all. Except the bbc which does not work in france for all broadcasts as we dont pay the licence to listen abroad.
My taste tells me it’s more frugal to play an audio stream with just an audio player, rather than run a full browser. A different footprint on memory. & CPU.
After all, the music gets decoded and piped to the soundcard, so probably just a matter of what else you want to do with your computer while listening to the music.
Hi @daniel.m.tripp :
Yes, Daniel. You remember correctly.
I almost always use mpv
for streaming both TV and radio programmes.
I once tried out freetuxtv
:
But the default URLs it comes with are pretty outdated.
Of course you can change the entries manually but that would require the same amount of investigative work as I would need to do with playing the URLs directly with mpv.
Besides: I have at least one terminal window open on any of my 4 virtual desktops and I am using fish
as my default shell. This makes accessing the required commands very easy:
E.g.: I type just swr
in my terminal, then “Arrow Up” and “Enter” and my local radio station “SWR3” just runs nicely on my system.
Added benefit: the terminal displays ICY-titles as well:
The bottom line is: using the terminal with mpv
is most convenient to me.
Cheers from Rosika
I’ll take a look at it. Might have found a project thought that works called Shortwave radio - I got my Fm radio playing right now and loving it!
Hello.
A bit late to the party, but …
I adressed Media- and Radio Players back in 2021 in one of my presentations.
Here’s the list, I could provide the odp if someone may have a look at it…
RadioTray
Shortwave
JMyOggRadioPlayer
KRadio
myRadio
Streamtuner2

May be outdated by now, don’t know if these tools are actively developed as of now either…
Greetings
How about Navidrome.
Soma.fm is good. They are powered by donations.
Hi edisondotme,
Welcome to the forum.
soma.fm is very good, thanks for mentioning it.
I’ve been a listener, not a regular one, for many years
Jorge
I have my favorite station as a default on Clementine, the best audio app.
It’s a matter of taste, nothing else. Clementine is not my darling.
