OS doesnt use cpu & ram efficiently

i9-9900K cpu @ 3.6Ghz
62.7GB of Ram available

I run Kubuntu 22.04 and certain things seem to drag down my computer. For example, I was editing a jpeg last night that is 31.8mb in size. Inkscape 1.3.2 when loading the image takes more than 30sec on each of 5 test loads, on 4 of 5 loads the screen will go black when you move the cursor over any tools and you just have to turn it off. Vivaldi (lateset) right now is using 5.1GB of memory and only 4.4% cpu but sometimes out of the blue it starts getting slow and slower and slower and yet its using less cpu.

It isnt any one application. It is when the cpu is called upon above say 7 to 8% … its like the OS cant or wont and ram is rarely used above 16GB. Maybe Im expecting more than should be but it seems that my Windows install where I use Autocad runs far better, snappier, quicker changes… than my linux side.

Is there anything I could do to tweak this via software or am I expecting way tooooo much.

Hi Wade,
I don’t know how to help you. I was testing Inkscape version 1.3.2 on my PC, which is quite old, and I loaded a 12MB jpeg and it was practically instantaneous.
I ask you: how did you install Inkscape and Vivaldi? Are they snaps package installations?

I’ve never used snap, but you can list the programs installed via snap with the following command:

snap list

Could you please post the result of the following command to get some information about the system?

inxi -b

I hope we can help you answer the problem with your PC

Jorge

Not snaps.

  • Swapiness might also be an issue. This url might be useful for you.
  • Also, your system may be running in powersave mode. I use cpupower-gui to tweak the power settings as needed. However, it is entirely possible to force Linux to use another cpu-governer (performance, for example) on boot. Here’s another useful url.
  • In case of ACPI issues causing this: have you tried updating your UEFI?

If all these measures fail:
Could you post the result from dmesg? (kernel logs).
I’m also interested in your Xorg logs. They can be found in /var/log. If there’s not enough room to post them, I guess posting them in a zipfile is also ok.

I want to know:

  • The actually active graphics driver.
  • How much RAM is assigned to it (logs should reveal this).
  • What dmesg says AFTER loading the huge image into inkscape.
  • Same goes for xorg logs.

Please post complete logs. It’s fine to remove privacy sensitive information, but please don’t remove anything else. Also, I don’t need to see all the logs from the past century. From a single boot will do. I will ask for more if the need arises.

I have not changed anything with swap but maybe it needs it.

UEFI… never done that. Even my very old shuttles have never had an update. I still get some update emails from the company on the older stuff.

Power mode:
Screen Energy Saving on otherwise nothing else is changed from default install.

5/12/24 11:32 AM systemd Started Inkscape - Vector Graphics Editor.
5/12/24 11:48 AM systemd app-org.inkscape.Inkscape-03e1c85d03b143fda2a60a007f703580.scope: Consumed 4.423s CPU time.

Xorg is over 1100 lines. You want it all?

There is a update for
*106 improved 128G memory stability & update ME for Intel security

*107 realtek audio codec

*108 default enable TPM function

*109 update uCode for Intel security update

The emails were all aimed at Windows 10 users so I never really paid attention.

Same here, but when I am coping a lot of files. And again Windows seems to handle the same load with much more efficiency, On Linux Mint, the copy process slows way down and even stalls. There is nothing else running on the PC.

I don’t know why it is or how to improve the copy function.

PC has an intel i5-8500 3 GHz and 8 GB of ram.

Yes.I want the entire Xorg logs, also everything from dmesg. The amount of time systemd says is spent on loading inkscape is not of interest to me. It’s important that the logs be generated from opening the offending image in inkscape to the point it’s finished loading. You can close afterwards, but Xorg and the kernel need to be able to generate their logs in regards of the offending behavior.

Also, regarding the firmware. The uCode might be of interest. However, I’m by no means a UEFI firmware expert (was hoping for ACPI fixes). Anybody more knowledgeable on this topic available to comment on this?

I use Linux Mint (Ubuntu based) and it’s default CPU governor “schedutil”, that might be the same with you. Changing it (for all cores) to performance will probably net you some performance.

NOTE: dmesg as root(!)

Xorg.0.log looks ok. Also, didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary in dmesg. Thanks for posting. Result from glxinfo also doesn’t look odd.

So, what’s up with your swapiness and cpu-governor?

sysctl vm.swappiness ← to ask the kernel how swappy it is.

The other url I posted holds some useful information on getting/setting the cpu governor.

I posted swappiness = 60 but for some reason it didnt show that I sent so… it is 60.

./… bugger… and then they both show up HAHA
