I just visited the Linux Mint forums once again. Looks like almost everyone is helpful
There’s Brave, for one.
If Shangri-La you seek. Elsewhere, you must travel.
I have to say I’ve been a member of the Linux Mint Forums for years and have not found it to be anything but a friendly place. I’m sorry if the op ran into someone who was rude. For the most part I’ve always found it to be a very helpful place. With many volunteers trying to help each other.
I had nothing but good experiences there.
I think rude linux communities is why a lot of people don’t touch linux. Not knowing how to do or fix something you’re maybe new to or haven’t had a problem in a long time and being told to just “Google it” makes the person feel like an idiot. Imagine if you’re working at a new job and something comes up that you don’t know wtf to do and your more experienced coworkers say “Google it”, you’d be ready to quit.
I don’t believe blaming the linux communities for personal rudeness makes much sense. Someone who brushes of a request for help with ‘Google it’ sounds more like a Windows or Apple sheep than a Linux person. Stay with ItsFoss, examine all of the gathered information in the General Category, and then ask your questions in an adult manner. You’ll be welcomed!
I’ve run into these types - they’re usually cowboys… Had this bloke say something like “I’m only goign to explain this once”… On some incredibly (unnecessarily so) complex infrastructure he’d set up… basically a bunch of stuff ontop of a farm of postscript relays… this bloke was a real cowboy… no source control… no peer review… He’d change shit on the fly constantly - no ITIL or anything (I kinda hate ITIL mostly - but I hate cowboys more)… and the shit “I’m only going to explain this once…” gets changed and it’s all different…
And I’ve encountered rude bastards on various forums / mediums yeah… I got some comment / advice downvoted somewhere (stack overflow) and I can’t post replies - so - f–k that shit… Screw you guys I’m outta here :
(not you guys, but the stack overflow downvoters and the rude gobshites on tech forums)
Accused of being a “snowflake”
Hmmmm…the mind boggles at possible meanings
I come from being a member of Peppermint Forums and we all followed Mark Greaves’s lead, being as helpful and polite as we can to others, no matter what? It’s when the answer is, “Just Google it.” In fact it’s an answer with a question, that
“Just Google it.” Turns into, because you’re having to type your question in again. If I can I will go out of my way to go in depth to help, even a written tutorial if need be, or a video. When someone actually follows your advice and it works out for them, it is such a great feeling of not just recognition, but a nice warmth especially when they thank you. Mark Greaves moved heaven and Earth to help people and it’s rubbed off on me too. I can only give my experience as a user though. I’m not a programmer or coder, but have learned a lot from past mistakes and have not replicated them.
People usually assume they are better than politicians. Linus comes out of the woodwork and insults millions of people. He knew what America was like. HE IMMIGRATED THERE! How many of these Trump supporters use Linux?
Why is Donald chastised for his speech but not Linus?
There are established scientists that are more in it for the money that true science. Just as there are professional politicians. Donald did something like build the wall. HILLARY CLINTON WANTED THE WALL BUILT TOO BUT ATTACKED DONALD FOR DOING THE SAME THING!
