Proprietary ridiculousness

Such madness is one of the many reasons I promote and support FLOSS.

Patent protection reminds me of the furious discussions in the indy music biz about copyright. There was an insurgent view, beginning in the early 1990s, that abolishing music copyrights, although clearly harmful to musicians, would be less harmful than the current system.
How can patents be sustained when there are so many shoulders upon which we all stand? Aren’t all advances incremental? Which of those increments get legal protection?
Patents and copyrights come from an age when we though one author created a work of literature.
