Remote Login Alternatives

Ive been using team viewer for years without any problems and out of the blue it says Im using it for commercial use and I have to purchase a license. Total bs … so, what are you using for remote access? Im looking for something that I can talk my mom step by step installing so I can login and fix things if there is a problem

You are not alone in getting this message, but it coukd be in error due to an action on your part or an update that thinks you are using it commercial

You can reset it and continue using for free, here is the guide on how to reset

I dont offer remote access to my own clients, just use WhatsApp to communicate for free, better than skype.

If access is more what you need then you could look at

https://remotedesktop.google.com/?pli=1

Google offer for free, but different level to teamviewer

Ill check out the reset.

Hi, Wade,

You know they had that big stink a few years back with the same issue and that is when I moved to Anydesk. I did encounter it with TeamViewer again and got fed up with them. But I did ask for the reset and believe me, it took 9 days to even get a confirmation email that the reset was done.

Now, I have even had Anydesk close out on me with a message along the lines of “commercial use.” But to be honest, I have been taking care of my elderly mother remotely and have had the connection open pretty much 24/7 for weeks, so it is not surprising in my case.

If I can figure out how, I would like to try the many FOSS apps available, like Remmina. ItsFOSS has an article on the options, and RustDesk looks promising. So in the meantime, you might try some of them, since it might take a while to hear from TeamViewer.

I did not know that. I stay off in my own little world working hahah
I did look at anydesk currently looking at thinlinc.

I did try rustdesk - not on my stuff but with a company who was trying to use it … and it was very buggy. I might check it out again as its been a while.

Havent heard of Remmina … Ill check that out now. Thanks

That’s often me as well. But it’s nice to be on the forum here and learn new things as well as help where we can.

I also tried another one called No Machine. And it worked well. The only reason I had to switch to it was due to one of my computers having Fedora, I think, and using Wayland, and that prevented me using RDP from my other Linux machines to it.

You might check it out too.

I like NoMachine too.

I used Teamviewer too, mainly because it is kind of well known, easy to install the quicksupport, and the whole thing is crossplatform. I can help a Windows user from my Linux machine.

I think that the business use suspicion comes from the usage rate or time, I never ever got it. I need to admint, I don’t use it on a regular basis, only now & then, maybe 6 times a year…
A fellow mate over here got accused with that business usage too, he uses it more frequently, I believe 3 times a month?

AFAIK Remmina is client to connect to some services, for me it meant exclusively connect to Windows desktop via RDP.

Now I imagine I would want to discard Teamviewer, and Anydesk would be no option as well, I’d had a close look at RustDesk.
I have zero experience with it, but it seems very sympathic at first sight.

If it is a rate per time - I cant imagine I would be anywhere near it – unless you could it over YEARS of use.

The nice thing about TV is when a client does have it, they already pay for the lic so I just use my side to login. Im checking out Rust again this morning as I have to troubleshoot my moms printer
