Retro Gaming on Linux – Any Tips for Running PS2 Emulators Smoothly?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been using Linux for a while now and really enjoy the flexibility and open-source tools available. Recently I started exploring retro gaming on Linux, especially emulators for older consoles like PlayStation 2.

I managed to install PCSX2 and it runs, but I’m still trying to get the best performance and compatibility. Some games work perfectly, while others have small issues like slowdowns or graphics glitches. I’m not sure if it’s related to settings, plugins, or the BIOS configuration.

While researching how BIOS files affect emulator performance, I came across a guide that explains PS2 BIOS versions and setup in a simple way:

It helped me understand the basics, but I’d really like to hear advice from people who regularly use Linux for emulation.

A few things I’m curious about:

  • Are there specific PCSX2 settings that work better on Linux?

  • Do certain Linux distributions handle emulation better than others?

  • Any recommended tools or tweaks for improving performance?

I’d appreciate any suggestions or tips from your experience. Retro gaming on Linux seems like a really fun area to explore.

Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to our community

I dont play games in any form but do use WINE as my Windows emulator on a regular basis to run dreamweaver. When asked by clients thats my usual défaut. There is also crossover which is from the same software house but that is to pay for. Never tried that.
