Running Slackware On a Dell Inspirion 530

It is old!! Was not that hard to install, after I got my old head wrapped around that ncurses installer!! It is by no means a barn burner, but it runs well on this old Dell hardware. I installed Slackware, with the XP disk unplugged, and Slackware would not boot, so I shutdown and swapped the satta ports on the mobo, and Slackware booted, and was then able to use os-prober and add Windows XP to the boot menu!!

Got VLC and it’s deps installed using the “ sudo /sbin upgrade --install-new “ for VLC and the 3 deps it required!!

Want a challenge ?.. try installing Latex.

I think it already is, but I will check!!

I know “ texlive-2023.230322-x86_64-1_slack15.0 “ is installed, not sure if it includes “ latex “ !!

You need to trash AntX and install something that works!!

Nothing that I touch works , … I can break any distro, or any piece of machinery, or any plate in the kitchen.

That sounds like one of my days!!! Like a bull in a china shop!!

Been working with my Dell Inspiron 530 have now got XFCE4 installed on LFS!!

Am only using startx, not sure if I want to install Polkit, Linux-Pam and reinstall Shadow, just is not worth it!!

Also installed firefox-115.0esr as a binary, in /opt and it updated to firefox-140.0esr and I locked it down, because the next Firefox version will be incompatible with this cpu!!

But then you shouldn’t get the update offered.

It will be if one does not disable the firefox-auto-update feature!!

Ah, I see. Then it’s not through the Distris repo.

It is a Pentium processor… 32 bit
I had toshiba with about the same specs … it died a few years ago, but it ran Void 32 bit quite well.

No, it is a core2 duo but only supports sse3 and maybe ssse3, was surprised it even updated!! Next firefox release, the cpu will have to support sse4_1!!

That is better than my Pentium dual core.
You are still doing well getting LFS up on an early 64 bit machine

Have an old emachine in my shop, might see what I can do with that old 32bit hardware!!

This is what Slackware and LFS are made for!! Takes a little time but it is doable!!

and BSD.
Try building Freebsd with ports, or Netbsd with pkgsrc.

You may find this site useful for older versions of linux 32bit

A fellow foss member mentioned it and I got a copy of mint 19.3 xfce to run on my netbooks 32bit and only 2gb memory. But there are other older versions of linux on the site.

Finally got udisks working and auto usb-device mount with thunar along with lightdm!! So I now can launch xfce, without using startx!!!

If you want thunar to see internal partitions, you need gvfs, udisks2, and lxpolkit.
