Scrcpy 3.0 comes with virtual displays!

I just read this article about Scrcpy 3 version and it seems like a big upgrade!

This virtual display feature feels next level. Its like having 2 mobiles at cost of one. We can do work related stuff by using virtual display on computer, while also chatting or doing something else on the actual device!

What are your thoughts on this?

Does it help with file transfer?
Could I copy/paste or drag and drop into the virtual screen

I thought scrcpy always had the display option?

I’ve used it a few times over the last 3-4 years - via USB “adb” connection…

But hardly ever…

When I want “desktop” features from my phone - I use DeX as it’s a Samsung - and - I have a “NextDock”… DeX does have a feature to remote display - but - guess what? ONLY MS WINDOWS!

When I want to transfer files TO my phone - pretty much just music - I use adb-sync - its very much like rsync… Apparently deprecated - i.e. developer no longer works on it and recommends some other thing that also uses adb - but it’s not at all like rsync - so I continue to use adb-sync. Note: adb-sync has another associated script that can do the same thing over wifi / network - but I never got it to work : GitHub - google/adb-sync

When I want to get files FROM my phone, mostly photos - I have a shell script that uses the sshd in TermUx to rsync pull (over ssh) - but I mostly use that functionality from a shell script… I just have to ensure sshd is running in TermUX…

Also - I don’t use the TermUX sshd to rsync my Music collection - 'cause TermUX doesn’t have write permissions to the SD-Card (this is something Google introduced in Android 9 - who even asked for that? Probably security related) where I store music on my phone - but it does have readonly access to pull files from the SD-Card…

TermUX only has write permission to predefined location on the phone memory - and my phone only has 64 GB storage - while my music collection on the SD-Card is over 150 GB… But I have a 512 GB SD card in it (and nearly ALL the current phone manufacturers - even flagship models from Google and Samsung - DO NOT HAVE SD-Card slots! This is profit driven and “engineering via the marketing department”). So - the next phone I get (current one is Galaxy S9+ which was EOL a couple years ago - no more Android updates - it’s stuck on 10) will probably have to be one of the more expensive ones with 512 GB of storage on-board…

I think the answer is : no…
It does sorta / kinda support “shared clipboard” - but that’s about it…

I reckon it might be time to try and get “better-adb-sync” working. I’m on enforced leave after Friday - for 3 weeks (get this though - I’m also on-call for 2 of those 3 weeks - I really don’t see how this can work - it should be illegal - they’re forcing me to use my annual leave balance - but expecting me to be available at the drop of a hat - it’s not leave if I can’t go camping for a few days - or hiking cycling for a whole day “in the woods” or something) - so I might use some of that idle time to try and get “better-adb-sync” working.

I think it is illegal unless it is explicitely written into your work conditions. I would not make a fuss though, just turn your phone off… out of range.

This might be useful! I currently use KDE Connect for sharing from phone to computer (like pics I take before OS loads, sending file from phone to computer, etc.)

“In addition to allowing you to mirror your Android device’s display (or virtual display) on a computer, scrcpy allows you to crate screen recordings, copy and paste between your devices, capture video from your camera on a PC (instead of mirroring your device’s display), and even use your Android device’s camera as a webcam (although this feature currently only works on Linux).”

Thanks @TypeHrishi!

I think you can transfer from PC to the mobile device. Cuz u can directly install apks by drag n drop.

I personally use Local Send almost every day. I think its the best for transfer over same network. Its easy to use, fast and works like a charm! And its available on all sorts of devices! U can try that @nevj @daniel.m.tripp

I just use bluetooth. I pair the tablet with the PC and tell it to transfer files.

The thing is that my motherboard doesnt have it. I just use ethernet.

Btw what speeds do u get with bluetooth. I transferred a 2.3 or 2.4 gb file in like 2 mins from my pc to mobile using LocalSend . Just curious to know do u get speeds faster than that …

It will be slower than ethernet. I have never measured it.
My mobile and tablet do not have ethernet, only wireless.

I also use it daily to transfer files between computers, but was unaware it can be used on Android to send files. That is why I still need KDE Connect (or in Gnome, gsconnect). I can read/reply to my phone messages from it as well. Plus you can control your video playback on PC from the phone (like a remote) and even do remote keypresses.

Whats the practical use of using the phone as a remote for controlling video playback on ur PC?
Isnt iur computer always in front of us and we have the KB and Mouse in our range. So why to use a phone?

I can think of a particular use case: home cinema.

I use a computer monitor, mounted on the footboard of the bed, to watch streaming and access home server media center. I can pause/play while in bed with my phone just like a remote to a tv.

Remote keypresses is like using the phone as a mouse/touchpad. When I brought out an old laptop whose touchpad stopped working, I did not have to go find an extra USB mouse, but could use my phone to navigate.
