Sharing information about events

Sorry this is not a linux question but more technology and communication

I am on our village association committee and run the web site listing our activities with a calendar of events taking place updated daily and planning available for the summer season.

Every year they turn to me and ask, what are you going to do about letting people know whats going on. As the IT guy they think I am an expert.

Everyone gets the address of the site from posters around the village, plus daily messages using WhatsApp showing todays events, followed by tomorrow’s events. Members can choose to opt in or our using the phone or web site.

Before we also had a tv screen with a powerpoint show, but that was never looked at.

We also have 3 large notice boards by the beach, by the chalet where most events take place , plus at or shopping centre …

We have a welcome meeting every sunday in season with free drinks where the programme is read out.

Ideal, what more could we do, but every year people complain, did not know, did not see, nobody said …

So my question, can anyone suggest another idea of information being sent out or distributed?

Thanks in anticipation

Is there a local free newsletter you could insert your program in.
We have a ‘Town Crier’… usually about 8 pages, and distributed free weekly in everyone’s mailbox, plus available in shops. It is full of lists of local events.
You have to pay to insert an ad.

I was thinking more technological ideas, we dont have a local paper here, died many years ago for a region one and so not target audience

You could start a local e-newsletter.

Not sure if this could fit the bill.

But this community oriented effort is mostly the fruit of Derrick Broze’s initiatives:

Reminds me of a couple old sayings I heard growing up.
“You can not please all the people all the time.”
and
“If you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing no one.”

“You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”.
― John Lydgate

“If you try to please everyone you’ll please no one.”
― Ricky Gervais

I checked on the web and found were these saying came from. So, regardless of what you do, you will probable hear complains every year.

Interesting idea, I wondered about linking rss feeds to update but then thought data protection laws subscription and opting out and perhaps that would be invasive and perhaps not appreciated in more spam being sent received

The big issue here is there are 600 properties and only about a third are rented through one agent so we dan capture them, but another third are private rentals and educating owners to provide links to our site just does not work. The final third are owners who live here full time andvjust cannot be bothered except to complain…

You can not expect the whole local population to want to belong to some particular local interest group.
I all the areas I have lived in, there had been a diversity of interest groups, plus some who are just not group oriented.

What amount of people are complaining? It’s my guess it’s always the same few people who complain often and long, in hopes of getting their unreasonable demands met.

The only way you’ll make these people happy is by going over to their properties and literally telling them about the events and making sure they jot it down in their agenda… and even in this case people might still complain with <insert excuse>.

Some people just cannot be helped and will keep complaining. If you’ve informed them of the ways they can get informed, your job is done. If they go to the town counsel, you’ve got your argument ready. You’ve gotta think of your boundaries.

Its the same one every year say the same thing… I really stopped carrying which is poor on my part, but hey ho. ,!

There was mention of installing a big panel with todays events, till they looked at the cost. So another suggestion was to broadcast to all the phones in the village area, like tyey do for floods, or emergencies, hope they were joking but suspect not.

There was a mention of a system “pocket book” but i have not been able to find more and the guy who suggested it is not technically minded in any way so suspect he just made up the name.
