That resonates with me.
Flatness is a geometrical illusion. In the real world everything is fractal.
What Chesterton says is that we dont live in a Copernican World … we dont feel ourselves flying around the Sun, we dont think that if we travel in one direction we will return to our starting spot … we live in a little closed ‘flat’ spot. … where Euclidean geometry applies, at least locally. So , for us, the Earth is flat.
Over a distance of 1 metre, a curve of radius 6371Km drops away from a straight line by 0.078 mm … almost unmeasurable.
You could build your house with the floor curved at a 6371Km radius , and you would not notice the difference.

Because the Earth is a Flatpack.
Everything is containerised to operate only in the Earth environment.
We might sneak out the occasional space probe, but all it sees is something foreign and unwelcoming.
This material view of our Earth as a globe ( of material) misses the point . The Earth is a container.
Its material shape is irrelevant. The OS supporting the container is beyond our material reach. We can form mental and spiritual concepts, but we cant touch it.

Not just flat, but the wrong map shape world map drawn by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in the 16th century was originally designed to aid maritime navigation. Is wrong and we should be using that of Eckert IV.
There is to way to project the surface of a sphere onto a flat plane without distortion

Most of the popular projections are flawed because they make the African continent look smaller than North America - Africa’s vast… With a correct projection - you could squeeze North America and South America into Africa…
And because of the seppo (rhyming slang for Septic Tank = Yank) influence on the Anglosphere - they make Texas look HUUUUUGE (paraphrasing POTUS 45 and 47) - when you could fit Texas maybe 4 x into my state : West Australia :
Texas is tiny… and belongs to Mexico anyway

I love the idea of the UN - but it’s a toothless tiger really… Like that time “peacekeepers” let one Slavic ethnic group march 8000 men of the other Slavic ethnic group - out of a camp to mass graves…
It’s a shame - I’ve love the UN to have some balls… and jurisdiction… Lke they only prosecute some genocides - apparently not all genocides are equal… an the other sham thing about the UN is the 4 victorious powers at the end of WW2 have veto power… So even if 3/4 want something done, 1/4 vetos them (and it’s nearly always one of the super powers on the east coast of the atlantic ocean doing the veto - although Russia does too sometimes - shouldn’t they have lost their veto when the USSR collapsed anyway?) - and why should France have a veto?

So if africa is suddenly bigger perhaps the uk can ship all its convicts there instead of Australia… No the government tried that idea and it failed.

Give every country veto power. It would make no difference … no effective action … same as now.
Too busy deciding on the shape of maps .
Maybe the UN should go into do into Philosophy … then they could debate things legitimately forever.
