But I am content with Mint. So I see no reason to change to another Distro.

It does have a live isoā¦ Try it in Boxes.
There are advantages in having 2 distrosā¦ something stable + something experimental
Multiboot is not difficult. Try it.

I installed sudo using emerge successfully.
I created two new users, the one I mostly use āxā (i.e. āMr Xā) and āgentooā. Theyāre both in wheel, and Iāve set sudoers (using nano) for :
%wheel ALL=(ALL:ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL
I rebootedā¦
Iāve tested sudo and it worksā¦

It has nothing to do with being content, it is about using and learning Linux. A VM will do no harm to your system.

Be patient, vim is no problem, we do need to discuss your make.conf
CPU_FLAGS_X86= ? Do you know what CPU you are running in your machine?
USE= You do not need the āmountā flag if you are not running os-prober
The next step is to āemerge --ask x11-base/xorg-driversā This has drivers for your INPUT_DEVICES plus the xorg-server, not sure how this works if you plan on using wayland?
From here on you need to login to one of user accounts and use sudo and either su to root or sudo su too root
exactly the same as before (lotsa dependancy issues and/or package masking)

Iāll may try that - but - Iād really rather get my vim issues sorted firstā¦ I wasnāt planning on installing X on this anyway - Iād like to get to a stage where I can get a headless server style VM running, with vim as my editor - before attempting to load / run / install X11.
On further thought - I will stop right here - I donāt want to install X - what I want is a shell with vimā¦
I donāt use Wayland anyway - as it doesnāt work with Synergy.
I am kinda / sorta planning on installing X11 when I do this on a laptop (dual booting with Windows 10 - not too fussed if I accidentally trash Windows 10 either - I never use it [only installed it so I could run a program to hack the firmware on my e-scooter, but decided to revert it, and keep it at factory settings]) - I know Iām going to have to do this several times before I achieve successā¦ But if I canāt have vim now, Iām not interested in going any furtherā¦
@nevj - I assume you were able to get vim installed without issues? Seriously - the lack of vim is a showstopper for meā¦
Also - when I use VMās I HARDLY ever install a GUI, sometimes I might just for shits n giggles, but even on those, I maybe spend 10 minutes looking around, and never use it again - like my tiny Windows11 install, installed it, looked around for 15 minutes, shut it down, that was 3-4 weeks ago nowā¦ Iāve got 11 other virtualbox VMs, theyāre all āheadlessā, mostly CentOS and REL7 and REL8ā¦

I canāt resolve names, but my resolv.conf looks correct :

Rebooted - and still an issue. I canāt even install nslookup or dig to troubleshootā¦ I might set it to a fixed IP address with static DNS settings - because the existing /etc/resolv.conf will get overwritten when DHCP lease is renewedā¦

Your make.conf is set for an Intel I5 with 4 cores, in other words your make.conf is totally useless
How do you wish to proceed.
So I should probably change my portage make.conf file entry from :
COMMON_FLAGS="-O2 -pipe"
To something more like :
COMMON_FLAGS="-O2 -march=znver1"
Note also : Iāve already allocated 4 cores to the VM so my :
MAKEOPTS="-j4"
should still be relevant - correct?

this is definitely an adventure, Iām quite enjoying myself, was quite elated (one might even say āchuffedā) when I finally got vim to install!!!
The -02 -pipe should be fine for a VM
MAKEOPTS=ā-j4ā could go to a -j8 depending on amount of ram
My main concern are the CPU_FLAGS_X86
you could emerge --ask app-portage/cpuid2cpuglags and run cpuid2cpuflags to see what the Ryzen 7 use flags are
If you are not going to use xorg then I would set USE=āā and leave it until needed.

Mostly a ālearning exerciseā, or a drill, for when I do it for real on a laptop!
And yes, Iām booting Gentoo, have been since yesterday arvo, my struggle was getting vim installed to the booted environment (i.e. installed and booted from EFI / grub [virtual EFI in VirtualBox]).
I reckon I should do it all over again from scratch so itās mostly there in my noggin for next time
Iām going to plonk a GParted boot ISO onto my Ventoy stick and repartition before I install on the laptopā¦ I reckon GRUB and EFI will be a bit trickier on real hardwareā¦
The only real difference will be in the make.conf, just research and know your machine, that laptop may be slow to compile. The only real problem i have had, putting Gentoo on a laptop, is with wifi, their is not a lot, if any, wifi drivers with the Gentoo install ISO, but I do not have the knowledge of networking, that you have.
I still reckon it will be faster than in virtualbox - itās a fairly ādecentā laptop, i7 (not sure which version) with DDR4 RAM and SSDā¦ And I wonāt be using WiFi during the install, just gigabit ethernetā¦ So I can worry about WiFi laterā¦
And even more so, on a dual bootā¦ As mentioned before, I wonāt be too fussed if I accidentally screw up Windows 10ā¦
I never had a problem, but I did install it after installing X and a few other things. I was temporarily happy with nano.
emerge should just drag in any dependencies, just like apt does. There is only an issue if they are circular.
dont be confused by all those use flags emerge showsā¦ it is just telling you what is available for each packet to be compiled against.
So I think in principle you should be able to emerge vim without Xā¦ in practice portage may object. @4dandl4 is rarely wrong on Gentoo.
