Thoughts on DeepSeek?

Hi all,

Deepseek has been on the news for a few days here in Germany.
I guess it´s the same all over the world right now.

Deepseek:

DeepSeek (Chinese: 深度求索; pinyin: Shēndù Qiúsuǒ) is a Chinese artificial intelligence company that develops open-source large language models (LLMs).

The DeepSeek-R1 model provides responses comparable to other contemporary LLMs, such OpenAI’s GPT-4o and o1,[1] despite being trained at a significantly lower cost—stated at US$6 million compared to $100 million for OpenAI’s GPT-4 in 2023[2]—and requiring a tenth of the computing power of a comparable LLM.

Does anyone of you already use it or has some experience with it
Any opinions are welcome.

Many greetings from Rosika :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi Rosika,
I haven’t had time to test it yet, but it’s already been in the news.

Hi Jorge,

thanks for the feedback.

Seems a dedicated app is available for android in the Google Play Store.

But you can use it in a web-browser as well:
https://www.deepseek.com/ .
For the time being that would be my preferred approach.
Running it as an isolated instance (firejail sandbox with --private option).

virustotal provides good results:

No security vendors flagged this URL as malicious

(scanned 4 minutes ago, at the time of writing).

Hi Rosika,
It is in the news here in Australia too

After Covid, I have an inbuilt wariness of anything that comes out of China.

There seems to be lots of hype and very little objective information on what exactly they have achieved. The same could be said about ChatGPT, I suppose.
Where is the scientific explanation, in laymans language, about what it actually does with information. These things are like black boxes to me.

Hi Neville,

thanks for providing your opinion.

It´s certainly a prudent approach to be careful.
Therefore my thoughts from my post #3:

Like so:

firejail --private firefox "https://chat.deepseek.com/sign_in"

Should be the safest way for trying it out, I guess.
Or: running it in a virtual machine.
Or: a combination of the two

Of course what kind of personal data you´d provide to the AI is up to you.
Be vigilant.

Yes, some research is needed on the topic.

Thanks also for the link.

Yeah it’s also in the news in Bharat. But the most shocking thing is that Nvidia fell by 17% in a day due to Deepseek.
Also Times of India checked some responses of it for some sensitive china related stuff. And it’s too biased. Check it out yourself.

Finnish TV (YLE) asked in Finnish if Chinese officials controls (sensors) what media shows. First deepseek started, also using Finnish, that it indeed controls media, for an example it mentioned Chiananmen riots and suddenly the answer vanishes and deepseek clears the screen and answers in English.

You can see the video clip here:

I do not believe I will jump on the deepseek bandwagon, for the near future!!!

I see here the “divide et impera” in action.

I’m not so sure covid came from China - though I know the official explanation.

I won’t touch that deepseek, even with a stick, no way!
But not because it’s from China

This tells it all:
“Is Taiwan a country?”

The answer is more than obviously biased towards China’s opinion.

Hi ihasama,

In Portugal, on the news, they said they asked the same question and the same thing happened

That indeed exposes the true nature of Deepseek. Political propaganda disguised as AI.

Yes exactly…

Someone at work today asked me to upload the deepseek model for them to use on AWS.

Scan it for malware first.
That raises a question… how do you scan an AI model?

Ask it about musical preference maybe?

Hi Neville,

… alternatively try it out in a browser (perhaps in a firejailed environment, as pointed out earlier.)

virustotal reported these sites as clean:

Should be safe this way.

How to use a firejail environment…

Hi @TypeHrishi

see my post #5:

… or any other browser.

You have to install the firejail sandbox first, of course.

For debian-based distros with sudo apt install firejail. It´s in the official Ubuntu repositories.

For Arch it´s in the AUR repositories.

The example from above uses the highest possible security option.
--private sees to that.

Firejail is very well documented.
