Thoughts on "HP Pavilion 16" Touchscreen Laptop - Intel Core 7 Processor 150U - WUXGA"

Hello Friends

My uncle has the intention to buy the following laptop

To himself and his son for two uses:

  • Uncle: MS Office, Adobe Reader PDF, skype, Web Browser, Spotify, VLC
  • Cousin: Same as uncle and all about programming Java, .NET, PHP, MySQL and VirtualBox to work with Linux (reason for this post too)

Pls could you share your thoughts if the laptop would be a good acquisition? Of course all about hardware. He wants have the laptop at least working for 5 years.
It seems my cousin is going to study computer science so this acquisition is important.

My uncle is concerned because he wants to know if the laptop has something potential “bad”. It because the cost of the laptop is not around between 1000 to 1500 dollars as is normal in USA

Thanks for your understanding

I used to work for an HP reseller from about 1999 to 2008. We had many people complain about the HP Pavilion line. We didn’t sell them. We sold their business line. People would bring in problem computers they had bought from Best Buy or somewhere like that.

That was quite a few years ago and may not be the case anymore. I just thought I’d mention it.

HP laptops in India atleast have a very good reputation. They run for long years. I think the one ur uncle has selected is a good one. Although the processor is an U intel series which are not very powerful.

If you are really concerned about longevity, buy a desktop.
Laptops in general have a shorter life than desktops, and are less repairable and less upgradeable.
You can get more computer hardware for the same money in a desktop.

As a company, HP has a bad reputation. It runs plants in Occupied Palestine and provides “Israel” with software for checkpoints and the Gaza apartheid wall. :palestinian_territories:

It used to be a very highly regarded manufacturer of scientific laboratory equipment.
That is a rather sad decline.

But they still develop high end machines…
I personally think involvement of a company in wars / clashes between two nations should not be considered for selecting for assuming its reputation…
We just want to buy a good machine for our own use…

I agree, politics, religion etc should not direct your buying choice.

Yes desktops have longer life and expandable upgrade possible. My prefered choice but space and travel controls for some

absolutely, these days laptops are a bit logical too. Like we can just take our machine wherever we wanna go. But if its a setup which for sure will only be used at home then nothing can beat desktops pcs. We fan build them ourselves acc to our choices. Upgrade them whenever we like. And they last looong…

It will. Peoples feelings about issues will enter into their buying choices, along with technical considerations.
That is OK, it is just another way of voting.
We dont get many opportunities to have our say on big issues, so why not use buying power as a voice.?
It does not have to be negative, there can be positive choices too.

Wars are only one issue. People make buying choices on all sorts on non-technical issues. Even things like doing what your parents would have done… effectively giving a vote to your ancestors. It is an extension of democracy.

So would I buy an inferior product to support a worthy cause? Yes.
For example, I try to buy Australian-made products.

I try to but India-made products too. As much as possible.

But I meant if the conflict is not even related to our country then why think about it?

I think it depends on the reasons for the conflict.
Noone supports conflict for its own sake. There is always some disagreement in principal behind it. People tend to align themselves with certain ideas. If there is a conflict involving those ideas, then they may sometimes align with the conflict, but they are really aligning with the ideas.

People are entitled to have their say on issues. That is what democracy is all about, and there are lots of ways to have your say apart from on a ballot paper.

My point was not to use sites like this to voice opinions on these subjects.

Ok to say i dont agree with the bias of x society so i dont buy them but much more should be done on other forums that exist.

Agree, … in my replies I deliberately stayed away from particular subjects… except for the comment on HP, which probably would have been better left unsaid.

I guess it could be about the Pavilion G3, my friend and his sister bought that one in USA and had a critical problem with the video card. So heat that the welding of the video card against the mobo melted.

That was quite a few years ago and may not be the case anymore. I just thought I’d mention it.

That’s the point, I bought the Pavilion G4 to my sister, It works very good with Linux. Thus HP must improve itself throughout the years.
