Trying to boot laptop: error message "wmi: failed to parse WDG method"

Hi Rosika,
Its fine to use. Those strange errors are not going to affect security… and they may never come back. Sometimes these things settle down.
Just set it up the same way you do with your desktop.
Dont use it at a WiFi hotspot if you are doing anything needing security.
Cheers
Neville

Thanks for your reply, Neville.

The would be the best soultion, of course. :wink:

Hmm. What do you mean? :thinking:

I understand it this way: I shouldn´t use the laptop as a hotspot for providing other devices with internet access, right?
Because it might turn out to be unreliable?

But the other way round :question:

If I use my smartphone as a hotspot (tethering) or my main PC for giving internet access to the laptop?
That would be alright I guess :question:

No that is not what I meant.
I meant , if you want a secure internet connection, do it at home… not in the local coffee shop. Public WiFi hotspots are insecure.

@Rosika
It is not really that hard, all you really need is a credit card and a set of small
screwdriver bits. Use the credit card to un-snap the bezel and sometimes the keyboard.

Hi again and thanks a lot, :heart:

@nevj :

Ah, I see.
Yes, you´re right, indeed, Neville.
I don´t know whether we even have a local coffe shop offering WIFI at all in our small village :wink: .

Anyway, thanks for the hint.

@4dandl4 :

I see. Thanks for the tips, Daniel.
I think an antistatic wrist-band would still be advisable, right?

Many greetings from Rosika :slightly_smiling_face:

I have one, but I never use it, just touch some kind of grounded object too discharge static.

I see.
May I ask what grounded object you touch?

I was thinking of the radiator but that´s painted (coated with varnish).
I don´t know whether that would fit the bill… :thinking:

Most any PC, laptop or desktop, is already grounded, so I just use the PC for ground. Have never had any issue with static discharge, even when working on a carpet floor.

@4dandl4 :

I see. So it seems to be rather uncomplicated. I like that.

Thanks, Daniel, for your help. :heart:

@all:

Only want to let you know that I just booted into my Latptop to see whether it still works as desired.
I´m glad to say I didn´t run into any problems, for which I´m very grateful.

I even managed to transfer some personal data from my main PC to it via the command

firejail sftp rosika2@[local IP address] # rosika2 being my laptop´s name

So at the moment it looks good. Whether it´ll stay that way remains to be seen of course.

BTW:

I guess my opting for Linux Lite 6.4 even for my laptop was a good choice.
I had tried some other live distros before, like Bodhi Linux, Linux Mint.
It was only Linux Lite that could cope with the laptop´s built-in synaptic touchpad.

That is: left-click and right-click worked with all distros. A double-click on the touchpad however only worked with Linux Lite.
I guess there would´ve been a way of tinkering with the settings somewhere but Linux Lite supported double-click out-of-the-box. :wink:

Thanks again and many greetings
Rosika :slightly_smiling_face:

You mean the metal case. Might be hard to find a ground on a laptop
You need to have zero static voltage difference between youself and the PC
