Tux Redesign... Unofficial

Hey FOSSers,

A reader, Michael Kolesidis, sent me an email and shared a redesigned, modern, and simplified version of our beloved Tux mascot that he designed and released under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license.

I am sharing them with you here:

There is also a I <3 Tux styled version:

You can find the new designs on Wikimedia.

I wonder how many distros use Tux in their artwork?

I don’t have a problem with the original art work

You mean original Tux. Yeah it is fine
Distro artwork is a mess in most cases, and it often does not pay homage to Tux or GNU.

IMHO there is absolutely no need to modernize the tux. Let it be as it is.

The top half looks like a monkey and the bottom half looks like a penguin?

No, this is not it. Tux is just fine as is.

There are too many people around, charged with continuously “modernizing” everything. e.g the look of the waste bin…

God save the tux!

Do I detect a conservative streak here?

Just to clarify, this is not aimed at replacing the official Tux. It’s just another implementation by an artist/designer.

It does look cute and friendly, though. But having a chimera for Tux that’s just to much for me.

Looks good, but I might be a bit biased since I made it :joy:

While I’m fine with the original Tux image, I like this rendering as well, so much so that I downloaded all available sizes of both images. While I agree that it’s important to pay homage to the history and traditions of GNU/Linux, our preferred OS is an always evolving system, and there’s nothing wrong with supporting the evolution of GNU/Linux as well. I believe we all can do both if we want to, and isn’t that a part of our GNU/Linux philosophy, namely, freedom of choice, and freedom of information?

Please note that these are a few of my thoughts about GNU/Linux, its philosophy, this modernized Tux image, and how it fits into our GNU/Linux Eco-system.

My2Cents,

Ernie

Hi @mickkb ,
Well, it is nice to see you on this forum.
Artistic people are needed in Linux and BSD.
Have you thought of contributing to the design of a DE? Have a look at Solus with Budgie desktop… There is obviouly someone at Solus with your sort of ability.

My two cents? No offence, but I kinda prefer the original… but I don’t even really like that either…

I prefer the one Apple originally made for MkLinux - or this one :

I’d like to see Tux logo replaced with Pingu (claymation tv series about a penguin), I think it orginated in Switzerland…

Or even Feathers McGraw from Wallace and Gromit “The Wrong Trousers” :

I guess there’d be copyright issues with using Pingu or Feathers McGraw…

However - I’m sure the Apple MkLinux (it was for PowerPC “old world” Macs - i.e. before openboot or PCI bus) installer had an animated Feathers McGraw during the installer - but I haven’t looked at MkLinux for 20+ years now… I can’t find the image that was using in MkLinux online… The Wikipedia page for MkLinux doesn’t have any images or logos…
