I haven’t been able to find a definite answer, but the best I can tell VirtualBox 7.2 fixed the kvm sharing problems only for kernels 6.16 & newer. One post I found said they were going to fix it for 6.12 forward, but I cannot find any confirmation that they did. So- kernels 6.12-6.15 still might have to use the blacklist work around.
Does anyone know if this problem extends beyond Ubuntu?

Huge Thanks for your feedback! ![]()

Gnome Boxes is just another GUI on top of KVM/Qemu, Virtmanager is a more sophisticated implementation.
Thanks for that information
Virtualbox on the other hand is a complete solution, from virtualization drivers up to the GUI.
Agree and multi platform
Yes, it is incompatible with KVM, recently there were other problems -starting with Debian 13.
Correct. I read a post about that in Debian official forum but if my memory does not fail me the modprobe “blacklist” should work
I tried Virtmanager (KVM/Qemu), and while it performs slightly better than Virtualbox, the ease of use network, especially to create bridged network cards for guests, makes me Virtualbox the #1 solution.
I remember read that few times in this network, because I use the LAN a lot, it is a concern for me

I didn’t try it yet but it seems the quick solution is modprobe “blacklist”. It if VirtualBox is the unique app installed for Virtualization

At least it is already resolved but Oracle itself

Understood, therefore without official confirmation
So- kernels 6.12-6.15 still might have to use the blacklist work around.
Ok
Best to all
I thought someone said they had the same issue with Debian.
Cant find it, but it is likely… the .deb package is at fault.
I wonder how Arch of Void or Gentoo would go.?

@pdecker
Apologies, we diverted your topic
Late to discussion. But a quick search on the web show a few problems with kernel 6.17.
I was trying to solve a problem with my WiFi and was told by AI to not install kernel 6.17, but to upgrade from kernel 6.8 to 6.14. It might be way off base, but thought I would share what I read.
Good Luck.
Thank you sooooo much for sharing this with the community. I had the exact same issue but I was dreading the thought of spending hours on this issue. Just no time for it. You post, cut that down on a few minutes. Very grateful.
Hi Karl and welcome.
Hopefully you too will be in a position in future to contribute yourself to aid others just as you have been on this one.
