Unexpected Shut Down, Ubuntu 22.04.03

To start with: I believe this is related to the nvidia graphics driver.
Quite early, after Ubuntu install, I changed from the default “Noveau” driver as this caused problems waking the computer from sleep/power management. After some trial and error I landed on the metapackage from nvidia-driver-535 (proprietary tested), which worked/has been working fine for months until recently. Now the computer often becomes unresponsive and shuts down during use. I can not work anymore without frequent saving. I searched internet for info, but found no relevant info but this line which I ran in terminal:
“sudo dmesg | grep -i -E ‘error|warn|failed’ >dmesg.txt”
A file which I wanted to attach here, but could not. Maybe someone with the better knowledge can tell me how(?), it’s 71 lines, 8,6kb of text.
Or maybe I should revert to the default graphics driver even if it means I have to re-boot every time I want to wake up the computer?

The output of dmesg would indeed be helpful.

You should be able to copy & paste the content of the file into a reply.

Perhaps enclose it into <code>...</code> tags for better readability.

I’m totally unsure, but did you get a kernel update recently?
If yes, maybe roll back that udpate, and see if it caused th problem…

It does look like Nvidia issue.

I suggest changing or reinstalling the Nvidia driver.

Do you use grub as boot loader?

If so: There might be a missing kernel parameter:

Please check out the file /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

If there is a line saying

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= with nothing after the =, you might try to change it to:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nvidia-drm.modeset=1"

If you don’t know, how to do that, give another shout.
Reboot your computer and check, if it helped.

Even if this fixes your immediate problem, you’re having more error messages and might want to try to solve the underlying issue.

Check out the following solution (It’s for Linux Mint, but that shouldn’t make a difference):

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=339223

edit: added quotes to the command’s argument above. (hint from @Tech_JA - thank you!)

I do use Grub bootloader but strange thing when search in terminal (sudo/boot/grub2/grub.cfg): “no such file or directory” . I have the os’ on separate ssd’s so maybe the bootloader is on the windows disk, as windows was installed first(?). I am very much the greenhorn so I am very open for help and input

Surely, that doesn’t exist.
What exists, is /etc/default/grub as a config file for update-grub, sudo also exists, as a command to change user context to having root privileges.
What you really want is probably
sudo nano /etc/default/grub
sudo: run the following program as root
nano: a simple basic text editor
/etc/default/grub: the file you will edit with nano, you pass this as a parameter to nano

Note, that you can edit that file without root rights, but you can’t SAVE it to its place… thus you need the sudo.

After you made any change to that grub config file, run update-grub:
sudo update-grub

This kind of stuff works on Debian, hopefully it’s true for Ubuntu s well

Edit:
when upgrading kernel, the older one is kept for a while. You can boot your system using the older kernel. Just select it from GRUB menu. If you don’t get the GRUB menu at startup, press and hold shift or Esc (try Esc if shift didn’t work) while loading GRUB. Look for something like “advanced option”, and select previous kernel to boot. If your nvidia works well with the older kernel, but wrongly with the current, then there’s some regression, if that’s the case I’d stick with the older kernel. I’m not saying that’s your problem, but could be. It’s worth to check…

I will wait and see how this Grub bootloader thing develops first. But yes, the most probable outcome for someone as inexperienced with computers as me
