Waste ink counter reset for epson et 2820

I have a epson et 2820 eco tank printer but need to reset the waste ink counter.

I tried the support at epson, they refer me to a dealer to reset.

Tried google and the only tool I found was at

The unbuntu verson lacks dépendances (not clear what) and there is nothing in the repository similar.

I downloaded the windows versions and ran it through wine. The program starts as normal and finds the printer connected via usb but then gives errors about firmware or just is unable to communicate.

The printer was working fine but not printing colour so did head cleaning and that did not help, the suggestion was to empty the waste ink tray which I did. But resetting the counter now does not appear easy.

Any suggestions before it goes to the recyclé ?

Its one of 3 I acquired 12 months ago when a friend died. He only used them for photocopies and this is the only one working, first had no ink, replaced the cartridges but still refused to print, second had a stock of cartridges but they were the wrong ones so will not work shame as there are 30 cartridges new, he bought 305 and the printer takes 304 not interchangeable and now this … perhaps thats why he kept buying new printers unrepairable ! Hard to ask him now, bit late.

My trust in wine is close to null. I’d try with a native Windows machine or a VM.

This might be worth a more in-depth look.

BTW, you’re on LMDE, right? You cannot expect Ubuntu packages to install.

You must be able to get a list of dependencies.
Did you get it to install? If not apt should list what is missing.
If it installed , try ldd <path to binary>
it will list what it is looking for.

It’s somewhat trickier, and obviously nobody wants to care about it…

I see dark clouds coming up…

Job for this evening on my wife’s computer. But I wanted to fix it using linux just to prove I could.

You are so right, did not think down that oath, usually I just choose a debian version and it works, but the site does say ubuntu lost the plot just by seeing a .deb file and not thinking logic.

No did not get that far, just downloaded and clicked to run install and that was the screen message.

After reading that, i think I would pull out.
You could spend a month fiddling with library versions and get nowhere.
Is there any other tool … from the manufacturer maybe?
Does the printer have a factory reset? That might do it.

Maybe interesting: This is newer and written in Python.

Hi Paul,

I am not able to help with this problem, so I asked ChatGPT. I hope it’s reply may be of some help.

Your practical options are:

  1. WIC Reset Utility – This is the best-known third-party utility. It supports the ET-2820, lets you read the waste ink counter for free, and reset it after purchasing a reset key (about US$10).
  2. Third-party adjustment programs – These exist, but many are pirated or bundled with malware. I would avoid downloading random “free resetters.”
  3. Authorized Epson service – The official method.

One important point:

Reseting the counter does not empty the waste ink pads. If the pads are actually saturated, resetting the counter alone can eventually lead to ink leaking inside or outside the printer. The proper repair is to replace or clean the waste ink pads and reset the counter.

If you want to avoid paying Epson, I can also help you:

  • check the current waste ink percentage (free),
  • determine whether your printer actually needs a reset yet,
  • or walk you through using the WIC Reset Utility safely.

Used my wife’s windows 10 downloaded, disconnected printer from wifi and reset everything. Ran the wic reset program, had to diable all services before it would action.

Ran the reset and before I got chance to read the screen as to what it was doing. Finished.

Restarted printer

Reconnecter it to wifi in house

It now works … Well almost. No colour printing. Only Black.

But that is where I started with a head cleaning, did nothing, nozzel allignment, no difference. Then deep clean. At this stage it said the excess tank was full, took that apart and washed the filtres letting them sun dry, they dont like that process and really should fit new but several users report working without so will leave for now.

I have another printer if I need colour or will drop by our association office and print colour with there system.

Thanks for your suggestions and input. Surprised there is no linux solution as I cannot be alone in this problem.

Is the tool and i used the free test at 80 % to see if it worked, before paying. That will be for next time.
