Webcam and security

I now get more laptop computers than desktop ones mainly with windows and virus issues. Windows 10 and 11. One thing I have noticed is just how many come in with sticky tape over the built in web cam. When asked they are worried about being spied on and never use the facility even when on WhatsApp or formally on Skype.

I either remove the virus with a warning they will be back again and again for me to repeat the removal of the next virus they get. Also give a lesson on how to avoid issues etc.

What I prefer to do is convert them to Linux and the positives of using that over Microsoft a battle against some but usually convinced on second visit.

But then it comes back to the web cam. If they don’t ask then I don’t comment on it.

So far never come across anyone being watched through a web cam and never though Linux.

Any thoughts on protection, security, webcams etc.

If I use WhatsApp then I click the video and the camera functions so no issue so don’t want to hardware stop it. Never seen in mint a webcam controller it just functions.

In Android you can protect against that with app permissions. I dont know that Linux has anything equivalent.
I suppose it is possible for malware to access a camera without using an app, so setting permissions may not fully protect.
On a desktop you can unplug the camera… laptops need a switch.
