I use the big three as already mentioned: DuckDuckGo, SmartPage, and Google. I try to use them in that order. For the one off searches I try to use DDG in a private tab or phone app, like FireFox Focus - one and done. This is to prevent avoidable data collection.
When I’m researching something - I often use more than one engine as it provides diverse results.

+1 to @Akito above - it’s important to remember what we are giving up for those “better results” when using Google. I have been solely using DDG for about a year and going great! Important to keep in mind too that, re quality of results, the more of us that are using DDG the more refined the algorithm will get in serving up those results.

I use DDG for some time now, I was told it was the safest, and I have advised many to use it also
