I have never ran s mode!!!
Nor me, there is no problem as far as I’m concerned.
What is the point?
I would say personal choice of.
The point is that there are no Windows look-alikes
because
it is not open source
Microsoft should open-source it… then we would get a whole family of little Windows variants, and there would be choice.
S mode does and limits choice
It only sounds on post bios errors thats why you may never hear it
S mode is the standard set up for windows home version but not all or every country
I installed 2 computers in our reception, both bought from same supplier, same spec, same everything except one came in s mode the other not and both were home version of windows 10
At some stage will have to upgrade to 11 but the software they use does not run on 11 yet… its a security gate keeper for our entry exit system. I dont know why as it runs on wine on linux mint but the supplier says NOT compatible and so I have to wait.
Hardware?
W11 out of the box is fussy as to what it will run on.
This forum is about FOSS, not about Linux per-sé.
There’s a lot of good FOSS software out there which runs perfectly fine on Windows, if you want to run it there.
LibreOffice, FireFox, GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), Inkscape, VLC, and Thunderbird are all examples of quality open-source software you can install on Windows and which will work just fine.
I’m not a Linux zealot, but I do prefer the choice of options Linux offers. I chose Linux Mint Cinnamon edition. Why? It doesn’t change and behaves like you expect it to behave: rock solid, consistent, and performant on low-end hardware.
That’s something you cannot say about Windows. Microsoft consistently abuses its monopoly in the desktop OS market to do all kinds of nasty things to its user base. I chose to move away from getting crapped on all the time.
It baffles me, though. Why do people endure the abuse from Microsoft? I really do not understand. More and more applications are showing up as web-based apps, and regarding Linux… there’s more software available on Linux than people think. There’s an awful lot of desktop software which fills specific niches. Yes, they’re different than the popular desktop applications which consume multiple gigabytes just to run, that doesn’t mean they’re worse, it means they’re different.
Yes, we tend to forget that and use Linux as a synonym for open-source OS,
which is hardly fair to BSD or GNU.
So do some open source providers make Windows binaries? I know that R does… they make every package maintainer test their packages on a Windows R machine.
I do not think an ELF binary would be able to run on windows, except in an emulator.
probably was never intended to be
and now we have a bunch of little Linux Distros trying to be like Windows
My two old Dell laptops and an old Dell desktop updated to W11 without any problem, although, the Dell desktop, was a see if I can do it project, it runs much better with Gentoo.
That is a strange goal, when you think about all the other things they might aim for.
Open source is losing its creativity.
Yes it is!!! The answer to this ? is very simple, but it seems everyone has an opinion and refuses to accept the obvious answer!!! The freedom of choice of whatever software I wish to run, be it, Linux or Windows!!!
We have 4 electric gates and a further system for car entry so it’s complex.
The powers that be have just installed an intranet and wanted to port the control to run on the cloud but between them they know nothing so I am waiting for the call to say come and sort it as they did last time it stopped working.
The supplier is not doing much as they want paying to upgrade where I will do it for free as normal.
We have a new president in the village and he is a pain so not rushing to be in the firing line
No point doing so.
Know how hard it is to deal with comunity matters here.
To get back on topic, a lot of people don’t know what linux is.
I don’t push the need to.
People do as they wish.
For me the selling point of linux is virus issues go away. So éducation of it did not work before but does now with linux
