Back to the topic…
How aggravated is everyone else after watching this video?
Is he trying to break things?
Is he a typical user?
He is an example of what I hate about Apple (fans). They ignore any problem they have as if it never happened and then go on and on about how stupid Linux is when it is clearly their own fault.
It annoys me too.
Linux users are in general too intelligent to engage in those sort of baseless advertising world jibes.
I thought I was watching my diehard-mac-user son in-law!!!
OK, of course I don’t deny your right to choose and use Windows. I think noone denies it, as you are free, you are free to choose, you are free to use whatever you want.
But you are not free to call Linux nightmare, especially on a forum tightly connected to it
The worst thing is that “thanks” to the way of thinking, not just software may contain malware, but (seemingly) simple documents may have them too.
The security of Linux stands on 2 legs at least - I think.
-
Linux is more secure by design. But the weak point is the user, as the owner of the system can type
sudo rm -rf /
, there’s simply no protection against it.
(Except don’t have such user in sudoers group ) -
The average user of a Linux system does like his/her system, and knows better how it works, what is advisable, and what not. On the other hand average Windows users knows nothing about the sys-internals. As a result, average Linux users are sysadmins for their own systems, whereas average Windows users hired Microsoft to do the most of the sysadmin tasks.
If we would take out the “better educated, system loving” user of Linux, it would be even less secure.
The same here. Actually Windows 10 was the thing that pushed very hard towards Linux
Because they don’t see the alternative way, so there’s practically no competition.
My sidenote with small letter: no competition = no progress (or if there’s a progress, it’s definitely in a wrong direction) = communism. The good thing is that it has to, and is surely going to fall sooner or later. History prooved that
Yes, because the GUI follows more or less the very same logic since Windows 95. That is successful, because it is practical, well usable. But do you remember Windows 8, when they tried to change that logic? It was an experiment, the result was disappointing, so even MS had to rethink what they offer…
The same applies to cars, the basic operational handles are the same, does not matter wheter it is a Maybach, or a Trabant: there’s a steering wheel, acceleration and brake pedals, a rod for changing gears.
What is practical, commonly used and accepted, is to be kept, and followed.
So is the steering wheel in a car, and the basic GUI elements in Windows, and all other OSes with a GUI.
I switched it off when tha lamp was tipped over.
This is an idiot, sentenced to use only Apple devices for the rest of his life.
I do quite lot video work on different conferences. I see different presenters at different places, with different computers. The better hosting events require the presenters to give their presentation over beforehand in email or on a pendrive, and when the presentations happens, they give the presenter just a “clicking” device to make the page up / page down during the presentation - basically nothing can go wrong. The less advanced hosting events allow the presenters to use their own laptop, that means a short setup before the presentation.
I can tell you, that IF there’s a compatibility problem between the presenters laptop, and the hosts or locations audio-video and projection system, it is allways 100% (!!!) a Mac.
So when no image, or a wrongly colored and/or distorted or flickering image appears on the projection screens, we can be sure, there’s a Mac on the pulpit beside the presenter
Normally yes, but i decided when i came to live in france that i would offer for free any work that contributed to my live here as a guest in the country. Especially around brexit in case i needed help. Which i think pays back.
Microsoft adds a disclaimer for people using Windows 11 on incompatible hardware
https://www.xda-developers.com/microsoft-warning-to-windows-11-incompatible-hardware/
This is why windows has issues we never get stories like this on linux
Microsoft even says the waranty of the physical device is void if you install windows 11 on incompatible hardware. They’re even saying you run the risk of damage to the hardware, according to them.
Doesn’t their os perform any compatibility tests?
If a forum, or members on the forum, cannot take criticism, then there is no need of a discussion of any topic, then I apologize. for my straightforward logic, on certain topics.
Yes I use Linux and yes I use Windows but I have my own criteria on how I use Linux, and to use a machine, to only boot Linux, is just not my style.
As for my “nightmare”, for some users, coming over from Windows do not realize just how incompatible that Linux and Windows can be thus the “nightmare” begins.
All of my machines ran out of warranty a long time ago!!!
"Doesn’t their os perform any compatibility tests?
Yes!!!
To me this so obviously applies to Apple. I just cannot believe they sort of just “get a pass” on this. It’s a complete walled garden. As I’m sure everyone realizes by this time, I just want no part of it.
If Google and Microsoft are being investigated for anti-competitive practices or a monopoly, then Apple needs to be investigated too. But, having said that, those three are kind of competition for each other. I know we need anti-trust laws, but I think we need to hesitate a bit before using them. Look at Intel. It was ruled AMD must be allowed to make a “clone” of their processors and now AMD, in many ways, has outstripped Intel. Maybe that’s a good thing for many people, but not good for Intel.
He’s not a typical user, of course. He’s trying to perform advanced production actions without paying attention to the basics–typical M$/MAC baboon. He complains when everything going wrong is his fault.
Thank you, assembled OSS fans, for not being like this clown.
That sums up what quite a few new linux users fall over on.
There is one thing about human learning that is universal… it happens in a slow series of steps. We spend 10-20 years in the education system. No-one has found a way of shortening it.
So how long does it take to learn Linux?
I learn by using, usually by trial and error!!!
Neville and I are of a similar vintage–I know he means trial, error, trial, error, trial, error, [insert repetitions], trial, and error.
No, it’s not. It’s Linux in a VM on Windows. That is not the same as Linux on bare metal. I am not impressed.
Same here. Win 10 caused me to switch to Linux back in 2019.
Is Windows easier? Yes. No CLI, no drivers to search for, more choices of software to install, low learning curve, and no OS to install, I plug my cell phone in and I can download all of my pic, no problem.
Given just how many computers makes models with different cards, software think it would be impossible to say that any system is 100 % compatibility… also its in microsoft interest to suggest it may not work, so better buy new. But still that is not forced to be compatible
Sorry Daniel
For most end users as long as they can go on the internet, use google get there mail … they really dont care. Yes the colors are different but generally its no big deal
