This should be a new thread/topic. We already have Warp-terminal and other pieces of it. Linux is primarily a DIY OS, so it wouldn’t be popular with existing users. And seeing what Microsoft is doing is quite the cautionary tale. (I was joking about you liking LLMs.)
It would change Linux even more drastically than Macos changed BSD.
I think I am with existing Linux users… I dont want or need an OS where I talk to an LLM and it gives commands to Linux.
It may, however attract a new species of user.
That’s me… I often miss the joke.
Yes, you fully are! Nobody seriously needs such things. Where would the freedom remain that made us choose Linux in the first place?
It was one of the reasons I went from Firefox to Waterfox.
I am using Waterfox in Android.
We have not seen a new development in the human interface to computers for maybe 30+ years.
We are all stuck on screen and KB.
If that changes … not necessarily AI … we all experience technology lockout.
What if the present is good enough, with no need to add any gimmicks?
I was not thinking of small addons. I was thinking of a revolution , like when we changed from running programs off punched cards to interactive computing and terminals.
Can anyone see what the next revolution might be.?
Something like thought-driven computing?
Ohhh, I think I should do another backup …

I had a confronting experience… typing away in the discourse edit box and I accidentally hit the google speech key … the screen went all strange , I swore, and it typed what i said into discourse …
Fortunately I noticed it before I hit reply.
I am wary of anything so automatic as speech…let alone thouhts
What is the google speech key?
And why the f*** do you allow your browser to use the microphone? ![]()
The next big step. No KB or mouse needed.
Today, when my wife “text” her daughter on her phone it is by voice. She talks into her phone and it generates the text.
Not new stuff. My urologist and dermatologue does that every time I visit either of them.
What I find amazing is the translation from speech to screen understands all the words they use, no matter if its a drug, conditions, things they find on exams. Yet when they talk to me quite often I have no idea what they are talking about, but I have my own little translation helper (the wife). I put it down to being the subject not my lack of knowledge.
Yes, not new. I meant next ‘new’ stuff for the home PC user. I think the day will come when the home PC will not have a KB or mouse. I won’t live to see it.
Good question.
I need to review permissions. That will solve the problem.
Is that what they do? I thought they were recording analog and had someone play it back and type it afterwards.
How does she send an emoji?
She has to touch the screen to select them. And of course touch the screen to start talking into the phone and touch to send the text. But she does not type her text anymore. She only does voice to text on her phone.
Sincerly hope you will, without you Neville and several others who is going to keep the site going ?
Mainly though with the speed of development in technology, who know what tomorrow will bring. The last 100 years ir so has seen so much development and so fast. Imagine for some of our parents a time before cars, tv, mobile phones, computers ….. to today kids who wear watched more powerful than our first computer.
I believe maybe the model T ford was around when my dad was born in 1923. But I remember my grandfather talking about going out on a date with a horse & buggy.
I prefer dating girls but each to their own

What I’m hearing about in crypto land is intents. You specify the maco result you want without specfying how to get it and communities of AI agent specialists collaborate to design and execute actions to achieve that goal. The tech is very new, but the people working on it are very talented and motivated. I think it’s going to be real for relatively simple tasks this year and rapidly become more capable. This is much less ambitiious than AGI and doesn’t seem to require huge computational resources, so it’s probably not smoke and mirrors.
