It makes sense to sleep after lunch during the hottest part of the day, then work later at night. I believe it is called ‘siesta’
You are correct. I believe it was once a tradition in Spain and Latin America.
We should revive it … helps with adapting to climate change
I can remember “siesta” (μεσημέρι : mesimeri) time in Athens in Summer 1971 - traffic chaos - everyone rushing home after midday to have an afternoon meal and rest - before either enjoying the evening - or starting a 2nd job in the late afternoon / evening… everyone honking their horns for an hour - was impossible to relax during that time with all the cacophany…
I usually start work early - and about 1 pm have a lie down and read for a bit - I hardly ever fall asleep these days - 15ish years ago I had no trouble getting some afternoon shuteye for 15-30 minutes…
You are all correct, but when you are as important as me, (ha ha ha) you power nap !
Many french workers are having their hours changed to avoid the mid day heat.
There’s also what we call the “nanna nap” in Australia… i.e. when grandma/nanna doses off during the day…
And on many highways along Australia - there are signs warning of fatigue… But they’re someone confusing…
Some signs say “stop for a nano-sleep” it can save lives… Others say that a nanna-nap while driving can kill… And you’re so f–king tired and bleary eyed you get the 2 confused and take a “nano-sleep” while driving!
Incidentally - I don’t ever remember my grandma taking a nap - but - my grandpa would every day! He was a healthfood nut, and he’d leave his plumbing shed (he ran his plumbing business and his chook farm on the same premises) about midday and have a bowl of junket (sort of congealed milk - sounds horrible but it’s nice - with vanilla flavouring and nutmeg sprinkles) and a big slice of pawpaw (papaya) - then he’d grab the newspaper, stretch out on his lazy-boy on the verandah and doze off with the newpaper over his face… That would have been around 1965 maybe? Maybe '66? My grandpa was born in 1897 so he would have been 68 or 69…
I have that problem . If we have to travel long distance … like more than about 30K, my wife drives.
Yeah, not 2 rush hours per day. 4 of them!
Retirement is lovely. Every day is Saturday. Everyone expects you to nap often. Driving tip: listen to audiobooks, not music. A good mystery keeps your mind active.
Very dangerous. About 10 years ago and lasted for about 5 years, a curtain would come down (eyes closes) for a micro nap (only a few seconds) that I could not stop from happening. Sitting in a chair, at my PC, and yes even driving it would happen.
I had a couple close calls while driving and one day in a parking lot I had a car accident. Being in a parking lot, I was going very slow. For the past 5 or 6 years no more micro naps. Because every night I use a CPAP machine which helps me breath at night which in turn gives ma a better night’s sleep.
Sorry to disagree… Doctors, dentist, medical centres are closed saturday and the shops afe full of people. I prefer to think its a Wednesday so everything I visit is open. But yes I can agree retirement is a pleasure to arrive at, but I think it really should have another name with all the rdv médical you need to fit in.
