An interesting explanation of why the Winter Solstice is not the shortest day.
I presume the explanation also applies to the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.
Timekeeping is a fascinating challenge.

My wife is tickled that today is the longest day of the year. Tomorrow she begins to pout as the days grow shorter. Happy Summer Solstice!
I have an ongoing season notification contest with a former co-worker. He complained the seasons don’t match the solstice or equinox. I agreed, but said, “So what?”, more or less. We try to text or message each other first on those days.
I did learn something I guess I hadn’t thought about before. Today, here, it is the longest day of the year. But sunrise has been getting later since June 14, while sunset will continue to get a bit later until June 27. I just assumed both would change evenly. This is due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis as are the seasons themselves.
I thought it was supposed to be the longest daylight day of the year!! The day is still only 24hrs!!
‘day’ is ambiguous… it can mean
Longest time between sunrise and sunset is the same as longest daylight. It’s 24 hours near the Arctic Circle and I can tell you it’s a very weird feeling.
We are not genetically adapted to that. Diurnal rhythms are fundamental to the way our physiology works.
Ask shift workers, miners and air travellers.
Our biological clocks are synced to the day/night pattern at one location … even the change in light at a full moon disrupts things.
All pretty true, Nev. But the folks who live in Yellowknife, NWT, Canada, and anywhere in Iceland seem pretty well adjusted. When the Air Force decided to send us to those places, it only took us a week or so to acclimatize.
Hmm. I guess your rhythm resets . If the environment changes slowly… like the seasons… you dont notice.
but
shift workers never really adapt?
Adaptation is an individual process, like choosing a distro. BTW, I got EGA GNU OS to install–Devuan-based, Trinity desktop, not Calamares.
I visited Quito, Ecuador a few years ago and the city sits at an altitude over 9,000 feet (2850 m). For the first 2 days i felt out of breath all the time because of the thin air, After that I was fine.
So how is trinity?
You know Qt based DE’ s better than me.
How good is the File Manager?
We need to develop a method of installing distros when the installer does not work. Nice challenge.
Our bodies are amazingly adaptive.
They must make more red blood cells in that situation … how else could they increase oxygen transport? I dont think your lungs would grow bigger. Maybe you breathe faster.? Maybe your heart rate goes up?
Before the industrial revolution - most human populations would wake up during the night, get up, have something to eat, possibly engage in some procreation activities - then back to bed again until dawn…
I believe the great apes also do that… They start preparing a “nest” before night, then sleep - but wake up during the night, become slightly active, then fall asleep again an hour or so later…
No complaints about most of Trinity, but I’m having a devil of a time trying to address my HP printers. And that would be a deal-breaker.
That has nothing to do with the DE. … most people use CUPS to configure printers , not the GUI that DE’s provide. Try CUPS … you use it in the browser …
file://localhost:631 … you should get an admin login page.
CORRECTION
http://localhost:631 … thanks Daniel
I have TDE installed in an antiX VM. The install is not difficult.
It offers several themes and you can have generic TDE or a Win lookalike or a Mac lookalike.
It has 4 workspaces … calls them desktops.
It has the same problem as xfce with halt/reboot.
Have not checked the File Manager yet .
It has a real KDE feel to it … not surprising.
I think I could live with it. … that does not mean everyone would like it.
You probably meant “http://localhost:631” right?
As each generation of CUPS spawns on us - they get more restrictive - at some point CUPS thought it was wise to block ANYONE but localhost or 0.0.0.0 accessing itself…
Okay - a vector - but once again - the nanny-state rules supreme - let’s restrict access to the cups admin page to anyone “outside” even if they’re on the same LAN segment as more - or on a close one protected by corporate firewalls…
Right. Silly mistake by me. Thanks, I dont like misleading people.
I remember reading something that referred to it as “second sleep”. You would go to sleep, wake up in the night, then sleep again until morning.
I do that a lot always around 4 am
But dont worry I power nap after lunch 5 mins and ready to go again
