Found a ‘new’ Linux OS on the internet named Winux (Windows-Linux), which is based on Ubuntu and is made to look very similar to Windows.
Has anybody seen or tried this OS, and are there any ideas or reviews? I downloaded it and installed on a small old laptop to check it out, and it does look pretty cool for Windows users, and I think Wine comes with it to run Windows apps.
Anyone? Comments and ideas welcome.
Hi Eric,
I looked but there is very little information about Winux.
It is not in distrowatch,
There is a website here
but it is all about features, and it gives very little on how this distro was put together.
There seems to be a fee to unlock certain features of this os… so it is not FOSS… I wonder if the source code is accessible.?
Maybe you have some more info you could shard with us?
Regards
Neville
Doesn’t Zorin have a “spin” that’s geared for Windows users?
Hi and welcome to our group
I have not used this system so difficult to reply directly
There is a video
If the base is ubuntu you should be fine in getting software and support.
But if you are looking to change and want a look and feel similar to windows but a bigger linux base and support plus wider software range
Linuxmint is a better choice (in my view)
Nice music the demonstration had. Certainly looks nice and it appears to me they spent quite some time changing some KDE/Plasma apps and creating a nice theme for Plasma.
While a nice side project, I’m baffled as to why anyone would want this. I am not convinced. I’m also recommending Linux Mint (Cinnamon) over this.
I don’t know if this is related or not, but there was another Linux distro/spin based on Ubuntu that closely resembled Windows. It came out of Brazil or another South American country. There was a single person producing it and having people pay a small amount (optionally). Eventually there was a security hole found where they had a default password or other very basic problem and exposed lots of personal information. That was shutdown and “another” remix was created, but was really the same thing behind the scenes.
This could be the same thing yet again. Or not. I don’t know that for a fact.
Hi Neville,
Yeah, I downloaded it onto a laptop and had a play around, then to get all the functions I donated (paid) the fee of US$35, and it works not bad.
The installation is pretty straight forward, and it is fast on a 4Gb RAM laptop, but as a Mint User for quite a while, I prefer Mint. Only reason I am checking it out is for Windows users that want a simple change over.
I did see that Winux is from Brazil, haven’t managed to get proper good support, but could still be early days.
Regards,
Eric
Hmmm, I am a bit weary, hence the post for more reviews/advice - I am very security aware, so would like to be able to check for faults.
Can you give more details re the security hole? Is there any way to check. The version I am running is -
OS: Winux 11.25.03 x86_64
If I remember correctly, the security hole was in their website infrastructure. They left the default MySQL admin password. The security issue wasn’t with their version of Ubuntu/Windows, it was with their website setup.
Its a shame they dont spell check the entries on the web site…
PowerTools Profissional
Hope its not a reflection on the quality of the product.
I would still prefer a recommandation
Or install mint then do the following
