Wiped my son's windows installation today!

Sure, it is not.
Hence my warning.
I also said:

So a nice nickname is OK.

You seemed to ask for a translation for the nice nick, maybe I got it wrong.

I tested Cinnamon 6.4(?) not sure the exact version now, as it said it has initial wayland support - in an early alpha state
It has tooooo many limitations (yet!!) compared to the legacy X11 modus.
IIRC master Lefebvre promised normal wayland support for 2026 or so.

Some DE’s may ditch X11 sooner, but that doesn’t mean it vanishes at that very moment.
I bet X11 will be here still in 10 years from now
But I’m happy if I’m wrong on this.
If all major DE’s would support wayland even with an nVidia… that will be the Canaan

That’s weird.
Could you show a photo?
Do you know the native resolution of your display?
Is your graphics set to that resolution?

There is nothing to understand. I’m the one who activated underscan (overscan?) in GNOME settings and in GDM (only possible with Wayland).

There was no problem, I just like having a black frame around my window. Yes, I’m a little weird . In fact I got used to a screen with under (over)scan, and I don’t want to change anymore.

I use Papirus Icon Theme.

Same here. It’s the best according to me!

Personally I would like to use the theme of Adwaita icons (by default of Gnome Shell/GDM), the problem is that it does not support popular icons (Firefox …). This is a theme made to be used with Gnome apps, and nothing else.

A quick update. My HTPC needs a GPU because my Nvidia GPU (gtx1060) went to my son’s machine. I tried an old Nvidia gtx680 but it was not recognized in either PCs. I could buy an used gtx1060 but am open to other ideas. They’re appr 50-80€ here second hand. For my HTPC I could use VGA from motherboard to TV but then the sound needs another cable and I already have an usb DAC which I use if I listen to music from PC to my main speakers. Would like to have a secondhand cheap GPU with HDMI which is just a plug’n’play with new kernels. I don’t like nouveau driver if it’s Nvidia card. CPU is i5.

I opted out of nvidia and bought an AMD gpu. (RX6400 card… its a low end graphics card and not expensive new).
Be careful buying old nvidia cards… they are not all supported in Linux any more.
At about kernel 5.19 linux kernel changed its driver module interface. Nvidia refused to go back and reprogram a lot of its old card drivers… those cards are useless for linux. If you are looking at an old nvidia card, test it first. There are lists but I dont believe them.

Thanks! I didn’t know they don’t work with new kernels. I don’t play games so not needing the new hardware. I’ll try to find a cheap AMD GPU or another Nvidia GTX1060. I prefer used stuff.

I dont either. I was happy with a low level AMD card.
Any AMD model should be safe. Watch the card size … it has to fit your space.

I second the AMD GPU.

I do understand much more than you’d think…
Gamers over here throw away very good very capable and very useful hardware as “obsolete and useless” for cheap, sometimes dirt-cheap…
I also like to dig the second hand “flea” market. Mostly there’s also the possibility to bargain, which also can save some cost.
As Linux users we definitely don’t need most expensive most shiny newest hardware, so we are financially in nice comfortable position to fund our computing needs

Ok! It’s just for watching streams like HBO Max or live TV. I’ll check if I can find a cheap AMD. The size is not an issue, it’s full sized PC case.

Ok, thanks!

So true :joy:
