Yet another interesting item I've found

In today’s Code Project Daily Insider newsletter, I saw this item, and it interested me enough that I want to share it with all of you!

What do you think of the title (In wake of Windows 10 retirement, over 780,000 Windows users skip Win 11 for Linux, says Zorin OS developers — distro hits unprecedented 1 million downloads in five weeks)?

I wonder how many of those will turn into regular users?
There will be failures and turnoffs, but if only 10% of them make it, it is still an advance.

I agree! I get a little excited whenever I see that our favorite OS has gained a bit more market share! To me, it means that my favorite desktop OS won’t be going anywhere, at least for now. And that all I really need to keep experimenting and exploring this amazing OS!

Hi Ernie,
No chance of that.
I think you have said this before… one of the benefits of open source is that if a developer quits, someone else can pick up the pieces.
Stay with open source, it has a future.

I certainly will! I even use open source products in my Windows 11 systems too! The best thing about these projects is that we can contact the development teams directly to request features, or inform them of issues we’ve encountered, making these products even better over time!

Did you notice we have a member of the antiX development team participating here on the forum

I did not! That’s really exciting! I’ll have to check Antix out, and if it’s anywhere near as good as Garuda, I may put it on one of my computers here!

What’s his moniker, and have we properly welcomed him to It’s FOSS yet?

ProwlerGR only contributes to antiX discussions. I imagine he is quite busy. He helped me a lot with init systems at one stage. He recently posted this topic

You will find antiX a full book on different ways of doing things. They have an active forum which their developers participate in.

That sounds great! Maybe I’ll put it on my old Dell Inspiron 5555 with the AMD A-8 CPU. If it works well on that, it’ll run great on anything I have!

AntiX is supposed to be made for older computers. It has a small footprint. It has x86-64 and x86 versions, but not arm.
The current release is antiX23, but antiX25 is coming soon… That was a beta release that I was testing.

That’s the one I downloaded, for my x64 desktops. I ran the live image, and it look’s interesting, so I’m going to try it out on that old Dell lappy I mentioned earlier, but that’ll probably be later today. I’ll want an image of my entire system before I do anything else, just in case something bad happens. I’ll probably use RescueZilla for that …

Hi Ernie,

I do not want to dampen the joy of people switching to Linux Zorin, but I just looked at Distro Watch Page Hit List. Zorin dropped from #5 on the 3 month list to #6 on the 1 month list. The report said Zorin OS 18, has already been downloaded more than one million times“. I know a lot of people do not put much faith in Distro Watch List, but I would expect with a million downloads (Hits) that Zorin would have jumped to #1 on the monthly chart.

Take care, Howard

I don’t use Zorin OS here, but any time I see that any distribution is doing well, I rejoice because that means that GNU/Linux as a whole is benefiting as well. My take on Zorin’s post was that the numbers they reported were based on downloads of their latest release, not new installations or users, so I suspect that both points of view may be correct

People going to Linux. The more Linux user, the merrier. I switched to Linux 6 years ago which makes me somewhat a newcomer.

Have a good day.

From the Zorin web site. “Celebrating 1 Million Downloads of Zorin OS 18”

https://blog.zorin.com/2025/11/18/test-the-upgrade-from-zorin-os-17-to-18-and-celebrating-1-million-downloads-of-zorin-os-18/

Now that’s a lot of downloads. I still wonder why Distro Watch does not reflect this huge number of downloads.

I suppose people download without visiting distrowatch to check it out.

I found distrowatch many years after conversion. Also not real numbers, as many download a copy for security, put on a usb key just in case, carry several keys, and how often do members here distro hop, no easy way of counting real users.

My apologize @ernie for my lack of understanding of Distro Watch. Apparently, the hit count on the watch list is only the hits at Distro watch and not the traffic at any Linux distro. Indeed having over a millions actually downloading of a Linux is good news.

Have a nice day.

The DistroWatch ranking confused me too, but I had my doubts that Zorin would post such a claim if it was false, too. Thank you for the unnecessary apology, and for helping to clear up this apparent discrepancy!

I very seldomly give a heart symbol—usually just a thumbs-up—but you got me moved with this post. I have been working a lot on my system, converting thirty years of Windows use to Linux. I have a very complex setup with LVM, and today I intentionally broke the structure, like the volumes and arrangements, keeping the fstab and labels written down.

I am now moving my “dirty kitchen” to the /mnt/media/storage folder; within it are my documents, music, and pictures. I call the desktop the “dirty kitchen.” I have not lost one file in doing so. I did this to test the integrity of data loss and the structuring of LVM. I added a new Orico board with two NVMe drives.

I am very impressed with Linux: the freedom and the “dirty kitchens” of how we want our OS to be. Thanks, everyone, for your support and knowledge.
