Yorkshire day 1 august

1st August is Yorkshire day, given covid restrictions thought I would share a virtual celebration with everybody of this important event.

Was going to add the flag and our national anthem, but the site does not support attachments sadly

You can sing along with me…

i had not realised that the site held so much back tracking 2021 …

What is the flower-like symbol on the flag?

The White rose of yorkshire, as against the red rose of lancashire as in the war of the roses.

Originally yorkshire was one county but in 3 admin parts or ridings, and all share the same rose but with different colours to the background flag.

You must be mistaken, York is a town in WA 100k east of Perth.

Eorforic I think was uner the Romano-Briton name…
Jorvik under the Vikings…
Then Anglo-Danish “York” for the town - and Yorkshire for the surrounds… Pretty sure “The Danelaw” encompassed ALL of Yorkshire - and beyond…

As for York in WA - in my early 20’s I had a job delivering frozen foods and smallgoods to mostly take-away joints - two days a week out to bumf–k like York and Northam (both inland wheatbelt), then the following day Gingin and Lancelin (the first northern wheatbelt, the 2nd a seaside holiday town)…

We raised Yorkshire and Hampshire hogs. I assume the breeds originated near those regions.

There is a town called York in Pennsylvania. But I did not see any Yorkshire in the states.

When yorkshire men created the world, we decided to give several places a small part of our dna, so auz, usa, and guess new york, but we had to help them more so called it york twice.

Did they ride around with hells angels on there backs… (harley owners group)

Glad no one mentioned dogs

There are Hampshire and Shropshire sheep, but no Yorkshire sheep breed.?
There are Swaledale sheep named after the Swaledale Valley in Northern Yorkshire.
The Wensleydale sheep breed also originated in Yorkshire. Wensleydales have a unique curly wool staple that looks a bit like Mohair.

My wife likes Yokshire pudding so much that she ordered some of the mix off of Amazon.
It looks like it is the real thing for it comes from AuntBessies.co.uk.

We were on holiday in lanzarote in march for our wedding anniversary, i spoke to the hotel manager about why we were there and if there was anything I missed about yorkshire. The next day on the menu we had yorkshire pudding, the guests were delighted they could not make them fast enough to full fill the demande.

Yorkshire sheep are special, hence the different parts offering different types. Dont try to mix them, they talk different and dont always take to incommers,

That accent variation in Britain and Ireland is strange. It did not happen in Australia, but there is a difference between Aust and NZ accents.

Thats because yorkshire and the north of England are the original language of England.

Some may disagree !

There are a few regional variations - and - there’s the accent you can hear some Lebanese and Greek Australians speak - and it’s more pronounced in Melbourne, the 3rd largest Greek city on the planet (after Athens and Thessaloniki)…

Also - Victorians say “cassell” instead of “cah-sel” - like my hometown of Newcastle - in Victoria they say “new-cassell”… and the worst - in Victoria (Melbourne mostly) a shopping mall is a “shopping mal” - like the “Bourke St Mal” (which is a strange pedestrian mall 'cause trams still run through it).

And theres a few colloquialisms specific to some locations - sadly probably dying out thanks to the domination of the USA in the Anglosphere…

Well , what do you expect. They dont even play Rugby League, which originated, by the way, in Yorkshire.
It must be something to do with the compass … all the northern parts of both Australia and Britain speak with the right accent and play the right football code.

This started at the George hotel in huddersfield just by the train station. Where on 29 August 1895 that 21 Lancashire and Yorkshire clubs held a meeting and by a majority of 20 to 1 voted to secede from the Rugby Football Union to set up their own Northern Rugby Football Union. In 1922 this became the Rugby Football League.
