Your connection to music

Hi all,

I’m wondering what connection you all have with music.
Are you only listening to music or aswel creating?
Do you play an instrument? Which one?
Do you have own music online you want to share with us?

If not, have you ever tried making or recording a song? What holds you back?
Did you know there is lots recording software available in the FOSS ecosystem?

What is missing in the creative production process for you, in order to take the step to create music by yourself via FOSS? How can this community help you?!

Hi Bulevardi,
Thank you for creating this topic.

I’m an old man who, although I can’t play, tries to create music at all costs. At home, we’re always listening to music and, when I turn on my PC, the second thing I do is put on the headphones to listen to music.
I can’t play instruments, period! I try to play the guitar and the keyboard and I still haven’t got to the point where I can record a minimally acceptable piece of music that I can share, although I usually record what I do, but it’s for personal consumption, I don’t even share it with my family because it’s horrible.

I know there are some, yes, partly thanks to unfa.

I can’t speak for myself, as I’ve done a lot of research into creating music with FOSS software alone. I think what’s missing is dissemination, other than on specific sites or forums, so what you’re doing, in bringing the discussion about audio to this forum, for me, is excellent, because we talk a lot about distros, but for example, we’ve never talked about AV Linux, because it’s a distro for a restricted niche of users. I used it for a while, but then I chose to install Debian testing and install the programs and plugins I wanted to use. Lately, I haven’t had much time to “play” with Audio

You’re already doing it.
One of the things I have a hard time with is getting plugins, and when I was using Windows, I bought a lot of plugins, but I never tried yabridge and using them on Linux.
I think the only non-FOSS programs I’ve used are Tracktion Waveform and Decent Sampler Plugin

If you want to open a topic for plugins, I’d be happy to participate.

Thanks

Jorge

Could not live without it. :star_struck:
I listen to many kinds of music, just to mention few names:
J.S. Bach, Fourplay, Mozart, George Benson, Beethoven, Piano Guys, Mike Oldfield, Boccherini, Jazzation, Tchaikovsky, Cotton Club Singers…
…better stop here, otherwise that’s going to be an endless list

Yes.
But my youngest son plays french horn (both classical and jazz), trumpet (jazz) and and piano (jazz).
Unfortunately we only have records of some his classical horn performances.

If recording someone else’s song counts, then yes, I did it couple times, but never my own (I’m just consuming music -a lot- but not producing at all).

Lack of talent, ability…

I know how to install Musescore, Ardour, Audacity in Debian, so I think there’s basically everything available for creating/recording music.
Unfortunately the community cannot install musical talent extensions into my brains operating system, so I have to live my life only listening to talented musicians creations…

There is a large list of software, plugins, sequencers etc available here:

There’s aswel a great forum to discuss about linux music here:
https://linuxmusicians.com/index.php

However, as it is a niche, only people busy in linux music production are discussing over there.
Therefore I wanted to spread what’s happening in that niche to the rest of the linux world.

I often hear people say “but I can’t play music” or “I don’t have talent”,…
But that are not even excuses. It’s just: start !
You don’t even have to be able to play an instrument or have knowledge of solfège / music theory. There’s possibilities with sequencers, LMMS, midi, electronic stuff…
Just try it out, layer some things, export it and share!
There’s no need to feel ashamed.
My own music is way from perfect, but I created it for myself in the first place. After shared, I know only a handful of people wordwide love it, and it’s just for those I keep doing it. I don’t want to make a hit, or be famous, only get in touch with others that connect on the same frequency as I am.
There are plenty of free music hosting platforms too, like SoundCloud, BandCamp,…

Thanks, I noted this.
Whish I knew about this forum before 2 years ago I went to buy a second hand Presonus Audiobox 44VSL.
that time I had no idea wether it worked with Linux or not, and found zero information about it…
I was brave enough and took the courage an bought it, fortunately it worked, and still works flawlessly.

I have no musical skills tried to learn the guitar but failed so gave up and sold it.

In my client list however I have a choir and a drummer.

Both use Audacity to record edit and play the music.
The choir are into gospel songs and use background music pre recorded.
The drummer is in a jazz band so he lays down tracks then records and mixes the other instruments into it.

I know nothing and cannot answer any of there questions just install and make it work

Hi, @Bulevardi and welcome to the forum.

I have been a musician since a young child. I play piano, violin & viola. I have my own repertiore of music I have written, both lyrics and the music and have performed most of it in churches, elderly homes, and at family reunions years ago.

I first got into digital music (MIDI) when I got my KORG keyboard and hooked it up to my home computer with Cakewalk. I could never take the time to write out the many notes I played, and Cakewalk did that for me while I played the piano.

When I was 40, I decided I wanted to learn jazz piano & hooked up with an awesome jazz pianist from my church and took lessons till I could play my first piece. I accomplished what I wanted: to see if I could still learn something completely different than what I had known in the music realm.

I stopped playing violin in my late teens. Then in my 40s, I was asked why my email was “myviolinsings@…” and a small ensemble asked me to participate and I thought, “No way! It’s been over 20 years!” But I found a teacher from the local orchestra and took several lessons and committed to the ensemble.

So I am both a consumer & producer, but have not produced for many, many years. Life gets in the way, as they say. But every once in a while, I get out my beloved violin and play the night away.

A child of the 60s, I did not care for the music then. Some 70s and on through the decades, but I never listen to radio. I just play my own variety of pop, jazz, gospel, christian & easy listening from the many digital files I make from all those old CDs & casette tapes. Occasionally, I break out my vinyl. I still have my old record player from when I turned 12 and it still plays beautifully.

So now you know.
