Up early this morning putting the finishing touches to Gentoo VM, to reboot to the CLI!!
I have compiled two kernels, a gentoo-source, that I did a manual compile and a gentoo-kernel-dis for backup!! If the gentoo-source kernel works, I will nuke the gentoo-kernel.
Here too. We had an inch or two a time or two so far this winter. The forecast in Iowa this week is looking good. Hopefully you’ll get some of that too.
Did you get the kernel to boot? I use the binary version of the Gentoo-dist kernel. It just works and update takes just a minute. Earlier before the binary version my i5 with 4 cores took few hours to compile and the laptop i5 with 8 cores was almost as bad.
Its time we had designer snow, just to fall on ski slopes, empty fields, on school holidays or weekends… no disruption. And can we ma’e it happen in summer when its warm enough to be outside to play and enjoy it, not when its so cold…
Certainly lowers the risk of your CPU overheating while it’s compiling gentoo
Going to be 40+ here for the rest of the week. It’s unusual for January - the worst heatwaves usually occur around first week of February (not looking forward to those).
Last year - we copped a double-whammy : front trees were pruned severely (against our wishes) thus the front of the house copped full sun from sunrise (house faces east) - the 2nd whammy was the aircon broke and we had to wait THREE WEEKS! Actually made me go into the office in the CBD one day just to escape the heat.
Ended up going to a white goods outlet and blowing $800 on a portable unit - and working in the main room of the house - instead of my home office… that portable unit actually did the trick for one room - had to run an inlet duct from the back door… but it worked…
The ones I hate are when it does not cool down at night.
I remember one year taking a swag and mosquito net out onto the back lawn and sleeping there. It is cooler at ground level.
There has to be a strong case for solar powered air conditioning. It would do its job when the sun is hottest and put no load on the grid.
I live too far inland for the arvo sea breeze to make much of a difference, if at all - they call it “The Fremantle Doctor”… I often hits the CBD area around 3/3:30 pm and drops the temp by about 5 degrees - some evenings it never gets to where I live in the Swan Valley - almost, but not quite, in the foothills…
I’m feeling kind-of strewth, no one has acknowledged, the manual compile of the Gentoo kernel!!! The weather, here, has moderated, after the snow, it got really cold, and I do not function well in cold!!! Sorry @nevj , heat waves can be very dangerous, you be careful and keep hydrated!!!
Do you mean you set all the parameters by hand and did not use genisoimage?
I have been wanting to try that.
You bet… especially if it is also humid and still.
I am trying to lose weight … that helps. It is harder as you get older… dont want to lose muscle strength.
Yes, that is why I used a VM for “just in case”!!! It is not really hard, just have to pay attention to what you really do not need like nvme support or signed modules although the graphics support and sound support are very important.
I did notice it and commented that I now use binary kernel
Maybe it’s not a big deal any more because we’ve seen your LFS thread? When I did my kernel compilations I didn’t try to squeeze it as small as possible or avoid modules or anything like that. Just did the wiki way + (yes to all in changed config) + dracut for the initramfs + efi stub for boot with grub. Can’t remember exact terms but you “see” how I did it. It was a bit annoying because I didn’t stay with Long Term Releases and was happy to learn that Gentoo has a binary kernel.
no, that is not what I mean!!! You have did well and I also have used binary packages to compile Gentoo, but I started my journey with Gentoo using the “Gentoo way” compiling everything and kernel compilation is really, the frontier. I am in need of conquering.
Why do I say this!!! There are so many things in a kernel config that, older machines, like I use just do not need and instead of the “easy way” I am going to learn how to do the kernel compile, the "Gentoo way!!
Just would be easier with more Gentoo users onboard!!
As for LFS, I have it booting, but haven’t found the key to get the xorg-server up and running, and LFS requires so much time and early morning’s is the best time I have. If you might have some info, feel free too pass it on!!!
I applaud what you have accomplished with Gentoo, keep posting me, I enjoy reading them!!!
