Has anyone tried SDesk Linux?

OK, now both you and Bill cant install it… Bill could not even get a download.
I think it is a writeoff.
Thanks to both of you for trying.

To clarify, the problem seems to be with the SDesk website. Accessing it gets this result:

Error code: SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG

The problem seems to rest with the website. It might be fixable if they’re paying attention. I tried Firefox and Konqueror and got similary reject notices.

Right, their server is the problem, not you.

Hi all, :waving_hand:

I just tried verifying the download source:

firejail wget --spider "https://stevestudios.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/sdesk-2025.05.06-x86_64.iso"
Spider mode enabled. Check if remote file exists.

HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK

Remote file exists.

wget´s spider option just checks the availbilty of a certain file. It doesn´t initiate the download.

But the test was successful so far.

O.K., that´s all I can say at the moment.

When I tried to go to the download link, I got the following error message in Firefox:

Secure Connection Failed

An error occurred during a connection to stevestudios.net. PR_CONNECT_RESET_ERROR

Error code: PR_CONNECT_RESET_ERROR

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.

Any ideas how to get around this?

Hi Ernie, You cant do anything, I am afraid.
It is up to the server site to fix it.
Not a very professional effort from them.

I looked at the site stevestudios.net. It all looks too good to be true.

Hi all, :waving_hand:

Seems to work with wget. I just tried it, but cancelled the download after a few seconds.
Just needed to know whether it works:

Think there are issues with the site, it detected me as being in the usa, not france.

Plus given that its to pay for not a free product, not going to go much further.

Think the security certificate is screwed, so not much you can do its down to the site owners

ATT reports your link as a potential malware site, warning that evil-doers create look-alike sites … etc.

After getting the potential malware site warning from ATT, I decided to forget trying SDesk OS for now. There are enough reputable newbie-friendly distributions available without trying one where the site seems to be fraught with a variety of issues.

If this is a genuine original distribution effort, perhaps the dev-team/developer can get help with setting the site up correctly going forward.

So you think fraud.?
I saw that suggested in some discussion elsewhere.

OK, you confirmed it. Thanks Ernie.

I think everyone had better stay away from this site.
Sorry , I did not realize.

No need to be sorry. We were all curious about the site, and the new OS. Ultimately, I’m not convinced that the site is a malware site at this point, but if the developer(s) want others to try their distribution, they’ll have to do the work to prove it. If Steve’s a valid distribution developer, I wish him luck, and if not, that’ll be proved out by him not doing the work to get his site up to par. I’ve heard about SDisk OS before, on ZDNet, and have never been able to access the site, due to the error I reported in my first reply, so at this point, I have serious reservations about it.

That is where I noticed it too.
The ZDnet link is in reply no 1. Such a nice review.?
Thanks for helping with this Ernie, and thanks to @xahodo too.
I am too naive .

I disagree. Being willing to try new things is part of the Open Source mindset, not naivete. The sad thing is how crackers seek to profit from us, and the fact is that I’m still unsure that Steve’s Studios is a malware site. I’m simply unwilling to take a chance that it isn’t at this point.

Thanks Ernie. I just feel bad about it. Lets shelve it and move on.

@ernie :

Hi Ernie, :waving_hand:

O.K., that made me curious and I looked it up via virustotal.
I let it analyze the page:

https://stevestudios.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/sdesk-2025.05.06-x86_64.iso .

The results can be found here: VirusTotal .

4/97 security vendors flagged this URL as malicious

4 out of 97. Any number bigger that 1 or 2 makes me alert.
On the other hand the result may still be inconclusive.

That said the respective homepage https://stevestudios.net/ yields the same result.
So it seems it´s not the ISO file per se that might be doubtful but stevestudios in general.

Well, I only downloaded those first 11 MB of the file to see if the download works and then immediately discarded it.
No harm done.

Many greetings from Rosika :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi Rosika,
Well, thank goodness for that.
I regret posting this topic.
I must learn how to check sites.

Hi Neville, :waving_hand:

Please don´t. It seems to have triggered an interesting discussion.

It can easily be done withe the help of virustotal.
Just look at:

… and select “URL”. Here you can insert the URL in question.

If it was already analyzed in the past you´ll be able to see the results in no time.
If your submission is the first one it´ll take some seconds.
You can always trigger a new analysis of the URL.

As I said, I only downloaded the first 11 MB of the ISO and then discarded it.
Didn´t even try to run it. Because: why should I have done so?
It coud´ve just failed and led to nothing.

So I assume “no harm done” would be the correct conclusion, right :red_question_mark:
