If someone could tell me , in one sentence, the purpose of mind mapping software, I might be able to decide whether I would want to use it.

FreeMind was my introduction to mind mapping and I used it on both Windows and Linux. It was one of the many programs that I installed on every machine that I used. For some reason at some point I switched to FreePlane. I really don’t recall why or when. I know I tend to be “loyal” to the programs that I have used for a while. Anyway FreeMind introduced me to mind mapping, and I use mm to develop ideas, create outlines, create checklists when I am planning something, to prepare and organize pretty much anything that I am thinking about. An incredibly useful tool for me.

Yes, but it seems the installer from sourceforge is only available for Windows and macOS

For your consideration

Thank you. I understand decision trees.
I use path diagrams… on paper.

It’s a real shame. If you want it on Linux, you either have to accept snaps or extract it and execute the jar file directly.

I used to be a heavy user of FreeMind just to organize my thoughts, especially when I’m writing complicated documents or O’Reilly books. I believe it’s not maintained anymore. These days, I use (and pay for) xmind, which also very good and has more features than FreeMind.

Tools like these are for much more than decision trees. They are “idea processors” that help to get your thoughts organized when you’re working with complicated material or just brainstorming. They make it easy to write down a zillion little snippets of text (your thoughts) and organize them afterward.

I dont compose text like that. I write a skeleton layout, then add my ‘snippets of text’ directly to the layout. I write software like that too.
I can see mind mapping being useful for other things , like causal analysis.

Yes, I did try the sudo apt search freemind and sudo apt install commands where the former returns practically nothing and the latter an error message with a suggestion to use snap but sadly it has a very old version 0.9 :frowning:

Thanks for the suggestion, in YouTube I found a video about Freeplane too

FreePlane is another mind-mapping software. It’s FOSS as well and still being maintained. But why do they put all of their stuff on sourceforge?

That’s is an excellent question … same thought about Linux Peppermint OS … available in the same place

It’s a historical thing. SF is one of the oldest project hosting platforms; I will not say I love it or put anything there.

I am familiar with sourceforge from the past. Back in the time it used to be a useful website. Now? I am not so certain about its usefulness anymore.

Sourceforge will host a 4Gb .iso file. You can not put a 4Gb file on Github. Github do have a a special large file facility… I tried it once … I failed… it is a nightmare to use.
Where else would one put a 4Gb .iso file if one did not want to run one’s own website.?
