Void is OK.
It uses the amdgpu driver, just like Solus.
The issue was with the Slim display manager… I replaced it with lxdm… dont need any other issues at moment
Because Debian is known to be swift & reliable.
Redundancy as a backup is not bad. I doubt I laughed at that. Maybe misunderstanding?
Maybe I laughed at the fact at how many backups are needed, as Linux is failing so often.
I just want to point out, how you already lost so much time on such an issue & are continuing to waste time on something, that should work instantly.
If this would’ve been a challenge with a Windows user, this user would already be gaming on this new graphics card after configuring it for 5 minutes. He’d be sipping ice tea in a pool or something.
Meanwhile, you, the Linux user, is trying to fix something, that shouldn’t be a problem in the first place.
Ah, but I learnt something.
The Windows user would remain uninformed.
Using an operating system productively means it must work. For educational purposes, a Windows user can run a Linux distribution & go through the jungle, when he sees fit.
On the other hand, you have to go through it, when Linux forces you to, rather than when you see fit.
@nevj
No, the kernel is using “amdgpu” for the compile of the kernel, the driver has not been loaded.
Your NAVI AMD card would require something different for the kernel to compile. That is why Debian is having so much trouble. You can beat your head against the wall, but until AMD updates their driver base, you may be in for a wait. Find yourself a Windows machine and install the card.
Or better yet wipe Linux and install Windows, if you keep on you will wipe Linux.
Or continue trying to fix graphics cards on Linux. The two activities are horrifyingly similar.
When one installs Windows it will sometimes use a generic vga driver, until Windows update finds a driver or one installs the graphics driver manually. So, in reality you are using a very restricted generic driver for your card.
You misread what I mean by ‘loaded’
At boot time , modules are added to the kernel, and that process is referred to as loading a module.
At run time, the kernel may attempt to use the loaded module code, and it may fail if the module code is not compatable with the kernel. That is what is happening in Debian, but not in Void or Solus. So in Debian I need a compatable kernel, Void and Linux have compatable kernels.
There is nothing wrong with the amdgpu module… it drives the card fine in Void and Solus. The problem is the old kernel in Debian. A short wait will fix that… maybe 6 months.
Yes, Solus does have the correct driver!!! What kernel is solus using? So, you have to wait
until Void and Debian updates their kernel? I think I might change my boot order and let Solus take the lead.
People do occasionally use Unix for productive work.
Some people even think Unix makes them more productive than Windows.
A few people think learning is a more worthwhile activity than work.
There might even be some who think that fixing the operating system is a more worthwhile activity than either work or learning
And perhaps a very few might think that creating a new operating system is the only worthwhile activity.
It all depends on your goal. Thats what the ‘F’ in FOSS is for… freedom from the slavery of Windows.

Yes. In fact, I use Linux every single day. But I cannot fully rely on it, especially on the GUI part, because even after a decade of experiene with nearly every day Linux usage, there are still glaring issues in the Linux GUI world, that cannot simply be fixed or the application of the fix is way too difficult & time-consuming.
The same way, we must compare apples to apples. Every single person on this forum, who says “Linux works fine for me” is not getting the point. They are using a single display, with a 10 year old graphics card, open a single browser a day & maybe two tabs. That’s it. That’s how they call it “working”.
However, if someone does real work on Linux GUI, then limits are reached faster, than anyone can shout “Linux GUI works”…
For example, please attach 3+ monitors to your graphics card. Enable HDR. Change pixel count on each display, align them properly and make it all persist through boot, etc.
Then, run IntelliJ IDEA & Visual Studio Code, at the same time. While you do that, work with Docker & run a QEMU, VirtualBox or whatever VM beside that.
While doing that, do not forget to open the occasional game from time to time.
Suddenly, you are in restricted territory & will find how limiting Linux GUI is, in actuality.
Therefore, everyone who says “Linux GUI works” is simply not using the operating system. They are doing nothing on it. They are just opening a browser & maybe look at e-mails once a day. That’s it. They are not doing any real work on it.
Even @Rosika, who is using her system very conservatively for specific jobs, at least that’s what I could gather & has acquired quite a bit of Linux knowledge over the years is sometimes stuck with problems like Bluetooth & wireless connection issues.
How can this be?
On Windows, these issues pretty much don’t exist. They are extremely rare. On Linux, they are super common.
In fact, Santa Claus has brought me new bluetooth headphones on Christmas and guess what - tried to run them on my old 100% Linux only laptop - did not work. It runs KDE!
Then, I tried a more recent laptop. I thought, it’s gonna work at least with the newer laptop… How naive I was, once again!
I gave up & stopped getting myself frustrated on Christmas, because Linux GUI is too damn stupid & dumb to run a generic bluetooth headset. Linux GUI had cost me nerves on Christmas. Thanks Linux. Great job! You can even interfere with one of the biggest events of the year, because you are too damn stoopid!
Needless to say, they work fine on Windows…
Linux is too damn stupid to run simple, generic & perfectly normal bluetooth headphones. This is where we were in 2022 and now are in 2023, still.
Linux GUI is a travesty. The only usable Linux is the one that has no GUI.
If anyone wants to show me how to get that headset to work, go knock yourself out. I’ll send you the link to the headset, you can buy it yourself & then fix the problem for me. I’m certainly not going to bash my brain against the wall, once again, just because of Linux’ serious mental retardation.
@Akito
I have been using Linux ever since the W95 days, and it has never been more than a curiosity, anyone whom is saying Linux is better than Windows, are only fooling themselves, or do not have the means to purchase a proper product key. Sure Linux can be useful, but only at a price, of dependability and performance. After spending $500,00 on building a new machine, I was criticized for installing W11.

The only usable Linux is the one that has no GUI.
My Linuxes all have a gui, and they are used daily.
With your attitude, there will never be any progress with FOSS because noone will try to fix things. We will be Windows Slaves forever.
I am at least prepared to try and fix the current card issue.
“The best way to use one’s time is to give it away”

anyone whom is saying Linux is better than Windows, are only fooling themselves,
FOSS is different from Windows. Neither is ‘better’.
It depends what sort of a world you want to live in.
And it is possible to have a foot in each camp, like you do.
I use Android a lot. It is vastly superior to Windows on a tablet. But I dont fiiddle with it, it just does things without fuss. A Windows PC is like that… just a tool. FOSS is something more than a tool.

Gives me something to do on these long cold winter days, while you are scorching under the Aussie sun!!!

long cold winter days, while you are scorching under the Aussie sun!!!
We are having a mild Summer. No heatwaves yet. Hottest day so far 31degC. No bushfires so far. Good time for outdoor work. Computing can wait .
How old is winter in Mississipi? We get down to 0degC minimum and we get wind off the snow covered mountains. It is not usually wet in winter, but this year it was so we had mud as well. Good time for indoor stuff like computing.

How old is winter in Mississipi?
Very cold here around Christmas, but has moderated some what, still too chilly for my liking.
We actually live in the county outside of Helena, Arkansas, just west across the Mississippi River from Mississippi. My property, about 3.5 acres, is outlined with red, been living here since 1981.

We are having a mild Summer. No heatwaves yet.
3000 km further west, on the same continent, the same country - we’ve had a wave of heatwaves recently - but just started cooling off on Friday just gone (Sunday here now)… A “heat wave” in my book is 3-5 days in a row with the mercury climbing over 35* (and sitting there most of the day).
No bushfires here yet either - touch wood (and hope the lick of flames doesn’t [touch wood]).
* that’s 95 F for you recalcitrants that need to be dragged kicking and screaming into the third millennium

that’s 95 F
That sounds like Arkansas weather in June!!! Thanks for all us illiterates for the interpretation.
