If you mean booting from a different kernel in GRUB, we already tried that and I found out that I had NO other kernels showing in GRUB so I had to install some.
But we tried and that still had no sound.
Not sure what you mean about “restart to the other without switching off” switching off what?
If I boot into 23.1, I have no sound; same with 23.2-23.5. If I reboot into a live session, then I have sound.

Sorry I was not clear.
In the live session you have sound but a restart you have no sound in other version 23 and it’s sub versions
But if you restart again into live your sound returns

Do you have the same music file in both sessions or can you access the same file from both
Some software when you play music you can see the wave form on screen getting louder or quiet can you confirm that both sessions the wave is showing and not just flat line.

That is assuming your MX is running pipewire like mine.
I do not use Audacity, just the basic players like VLC or Strawberry in MX. I use that to play a wav file that is accessible even in the live session on my hard drive.
I go to that file and right click open with and choose either VLC/Strawberry or both and in live session that same wav file plays fine. It plays through my speakers and through BT speaker connected.
When I boot back into hard install of MX 23.5, only BT speaker works. And in both instances, live or hard install sessions, you can see the volume lines surge so that you know there is sound being played and recognized by the system or music app, but you do not hear it from laptop speakers, only a BT speaker.
The pavucontrol (which is how you select different outputs and control volume levels) shows the same surge when a music file is playing. And if I switch to the mic (input) tab, you see it moving slightly and if I speak, it surges all the way to the end–meaning even the mic is working. Darndest thing.

Indeed it does tell us something.
Your hard install only has pulseaudio… there is no pipewire service running.
Pipiwire may be installed… you can check with dpkg -l | grep pipe
… but it is not active
So, you are only dealing with pulseaudio
BT may have corrupted pulseaudio settings.
So you need to either
- remove pulseaudio and run pipewire… a bit drastic
- learn to configure pulseaudio … less drastic but more work
Another way to check… use the MX quick system info tool and look at audio… it will tell you what is running . and list the sound devices.

Now… you start daemons with the init system… I thought you said you could use either systemd or sysVinit… which one are you on at moment?

You dont want to have both pipewire and pulseaudio services running… it is one or the other… they will clash if you start both.
So decide
- which init system you want to use
- which of pulseaudio or pipewire you want running.
Before you change anything at least get a timeshift backup.
And that is under another topic of mine (here on ItsFOSS)…Ext HDD input/output error (not hardware failure) which Timeshift is linked to and can no longer access.
I think because I could not delete an old CZ image since I did not have permission: TimeShift had it (long story, but a known issue that it mounts the drive for backups and does not release). Nonetheless, I changed permissions to ME and now TS does not work and says it has no snapshots (probably because it now has no permission to drive?). And we know there were snapshots…I just used one when my BT stopped working last weekend to roll back to Jan 31.
I tried to create a new snapshot today and TS stated the in/out error since I pointed the backups to that ext hdd.
I really have to find a different system snapshot method. Since all of my /home for MX is on that drive and all of my CZ and TS snapshots, of course I should be the owner. But not with TS.
Alas, another issue to resolve on that drive. BUT, I have a snapshot of the ext SSD that I used to test MX the other day as it was 23.2. So I can wipe that drive and at least get a current TS shapshot saved there.
Then I will get back to resolving this issue .
As for init, I have been booting back into sysV since I realized that was what was under my Advanced in GRUB. So that is where I have been giving udpates from.

I always do backups as root, and if I used TS, I would run that as root too. Anything else will run out of permissions.
Do you mean you want yo abandon TS, or are you just looking for somewhere to put its files?
OK, that is one decision… you are sticking with sysVinit.
so
- if you want to run pipewire instead of pulseaudio, you simply use sysVinit to stop pulseaudio, then use it to start pipewire. No installs needed, they are both already installed.
- if you want to stay with pulseaudio, you need to master its impossible config and find what BT interfered with… It might be easier to purge pulseaudio and reinstall it. A purge would hopefully get rid of its config files, although I have seen purges fail to cleanup properly.
I know what I would do… change to pipewire. It might be an idea to have a practice with pipewire first on a live usb.
Exactly, this seems to be pure native pulseaudio setup. Pipewire would be mentioned in “server name” property, like this:

Installing PW will remove PA, as they conflict, at least on Debian thi is the case.

That suggests as the DE is dependent on either sound system, if I purge one, the other is has to be installed.

I redid my nasty things to the VM to have PA again.
It seems, that installin pipewire-setup-mx alone is enough to get rid of pulseaudio and replace it with PW as it was present with the default install.
So @Sheila_Flanagan , can you please check:
sudo apt install pipewire-setup-mx
then reboot.
After reboot PW should be used.

I dont understand the relationship between PW/PA and the init system. Are they services? Why would it only work with systemd?

I have been assuming that one would have to start or stop a service… is that wrong? Do the package system installs automatically start any daemons?
Sheila seems to me to have both PW and PA installed, but only PA has a server. Is that wrong too?
Systemd provides a special way to start user-specific services upon login. Pure PW seems to depend on that.
According to that
it appears to be mainly a matter of installing the proper autostart files in /etc/xdg/autostart/pipewire.desktop or setting XDG_RUNTIME_DIR as an environment variable.
I think installing pipewire-setup-mx does this.
