Still no definitive answer why mic not working on Zoom in Cinnamon?

There have been a lot of answers to this question but none that work for me. Has anyone else got answers please.

I’m running Cinnamon as well as a DE here (on Linux Mint). No problems here. That being said, I use my webcam’s mic.

I know this sounds silly, but have you checked the actual zoom settings on what input device it’s using. I once looked all around the system when all I needed to do was select the correct input device. Is the mic perhaps muted (perhaps in Cinnamon)? Is it actually connected to your computer?

Other than that, could you give us the relevant logs of zoom and dmesg? What mic are we talking about? Wired? Bluetooth? USB?

EDIT: just thought of some other questions:

  • Which version of Linux Mint?
  • When was the last time you updated?
  • What does it say in the audio setting of Cinnamon?
  • Can you give us any more details about your system and mic?

In general: the more details you give us, the better we’ll be able to help you. “It’s broken!” won’t help us help you.

I can confirm, here (LMDE5, Cinnamon 6.4.8), all microphones are working, webcam and headset.
Zoom not available.

Thanks for your reply, tried all mic options in Zoom, using HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF with i5 CPU

Linux Mint 22.2 with latest kernel. I do updates as they appear.

Sound devices HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH

webcam 808 mono with built in mic. tried all the options, no input.

However, I am able to use my headset and mic which does work but not ideal as two of us need to be on zoom together.

Hope that info will shed some light.

You can use the test mic function in the zoom settings. No need for two persons to be logged in.

Not two persons logged in, we both sit in front of the same desktop, so headphones are not viable. We need to be able to answer questions as a team. It’s the webcam mic that is not working.

dmesg and zoom logs, please.

Hi Bruno,
I can’t help you with Zoom because I don’t even use it, but I’ve thought of something that might help you.

I’m working with PipeWire (audio) and it happens very occasionally that I get no sound. I do everything I know and I still get no sound. The only program I’ve been able to use successfully is alsamixer, which manages to “recover” the audio output level, perhaps because I’m using an external sound card.
I can activate and deactivate audio channels in alsamixer

As I said at the beginning, it’s not a solution for Zoom, but try alsamixer (if it’s not installed, install it) and see if your webcam mic appears and, if it does, change the settings in alsamixer itself, example, check if mic is not muted.

Hope you find my tip useful

Hi Jorge, thanks for the answer. I have alsamixer installed but it does not give an option for mic input level adjustment. Output is all sorted.

Thanks for the tip

Hi Bruno ,
But do you have the camera’s MIC bar in alsamixer?
What is the indication at the bottom of the bar, “MM”?
(“MM” means the mic is muted)

Hi Jorge, sorry for the late reply, been at the Hospital until a short while ago.

I always unmute everything in alsamixer after any changes and set all to max.

Hi Bruno,

I hope you’re well.

Thanks for sending a screenshot of alsamixer - a picture is worth a thousand words.

From what I can see, you don’t have MIC in alsamixer, which could mean that your webcam’s microphone isn’t being detected by the system.

Linux Mint 22 uses PipeWire as the audio server by default.

I don’t have access to my PC and possibly won’t until next week, so I’m going to install LM 22.2, test it with a USB webcam and Zoom and, if you want, I’ll give you feedback on the tests I’ll run to see if the webcam’s audio is recognized.

From what I’ve read on other forums, there are users complaining that after switching to LM 22, they’ve been left without webcam audio.

May I ask you a question: Which webcam are you using? (I’ve come across several types of 808 mono webcam)

Not sure what make it is, had it for a few years and always worked until last two cinnamon upgrades. Hardinfo2 just shows it as USB-audio GENERAL WEBCAM

Haven’t tried an earlier cinnamon yet, but intend downloading ISOs for that and will do a usb boot to test if that helps. With ventoy.

Hi Bruno,
Thank you for your reply.

I’ve read that some users have tried the LM21 just like you want to, and the mics worked.

It would be great if you could see the differences between the LM21 and LM22, but you have to bear in mind that the LM22 changed the audio server to PipeWire, so you’ll have some differences in the audio here.

If you haven’t already, you can run the commands:

lsusb

dmesg | grep video

Inxi -Ax

Post the results here.

Hi Bruno,
Thank you for your reply.

As far as I can tell, the camera’s audio hardware is being detected:

Can you do one more test?
In the screenshot you sent from alsamixer, you sent it from the HDA Intel PCH card.
Can you open alsamixer again, press F6 and see if you have any other devices? If you do, can you select it and send a new printscreen?
Thank you

Jorge
