What does "SMART ATA Error Log Structure error: invalid SMART checksum." mean?

Hello friends

I have a situation about the SSD reported at:

I did do a research in the web and is suggested work with the smartctl command and GSMartControl GUI

First the SSD partitions for a better understanding

/dev/sda1

/dev/sda2

As follows the reports:

sudo smartctl -H /dev/sda1

sudo smartctl -H /dev/sda1

Sorry for the long outputs

I am not an expert about this data report, so I am providing detailed information for you. According with the long output, Should I assume the SSD is passing away? So far my main concern is the following:

Warning! SMART ATA Error Log Structure error: invalid SMART checksum.
SMART Error Log Version: 1
No Errors Logged

and

Warning! SMART Extended Comprehensive Error Log Structure error: invalid SMART checksum.
SMART Extended Comprehensive Error Log Version: 1 (16 sectors)

Note: Pls, if you find some important point in the result let me know

Furthermore was executed the GSMartControl tool, with Extended Self-test, as follows:

Once completed, in the Error Log tab appears as follows:

Again

Complete error log
SMART Extended Comprehensive Error Log Version: 1 (16 sectors)

Again, is my SSD passing away? I am not sure what to do, in these days I am going to go to the hardware provider, to apply the warranty if is necessary, so I am want be very sure the information he is going to give me matches with your answer(s).

Thanks for your understanding

You only need to run smartctl on the raw device, not the partitions.

i.e. /dev/sda - not /dev/sda1, 2, 3 et cetera (sda1, sda2 etc are partitions).

So - you only need to run it once :

Pop!_OS :

╭─x@fenrix ~
╰─➤ lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINTS
loop0 7:0 0 96.1M 1 loop /snap/cool-retro-term/150
loop1 7:1 0 55.7M 1 loop /snap/core18/2812
loop2 7:2 0 55.7M 1 loop /snap/core18/2823
loop3 7:3 0 74.2M 1 loop /snap/core22/1122
loop4 7:4 0 284.6M 1 loop /snap/gzdoom/121
loop6 7:6 0 38.7M 1 loop /snap/snapd/21465
loop7 7:7 0 74.2M 1 loop /snap/core22/1380
loop8 7:8 0 38.8M 1 loop /snap/snapd/21759
zram0 251:0 0 13.6G 0 disk [SWAP]
nvme0n1 259:0 0 931.5G 0 disk
├─nvme0n1p1 259:1 0 1022M 0 part /boot/efi
├─nvme0n1p2 259:2 0 4G 0 part /recovery
├─nvme0n1p3 259:3 0 922.5G 0 part
│ └─cryptdata 252:0 0 922.5G 0 crypt

  └─cryptswap 252:2 0 4G 0 crypt [SWAP]

In my case - I’m only interested in nvme0n1 above :

╭─x@fenrix ~
╰─➤ sudo smartctl -H /dev/nvme0n1
smartctl 7.2 2020-12-30 r5155 [x86_64-linux-6.6.6-76060606-generic] (local build)

On Red Hat systems - SSD are abstracted as /dev/sda, /dev/sdb et cetera, my RHEL 8 system :

╭─x@fuglpige ~
╰─➤ sudo lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
loop0 7:0 0 106.3M 1 loop /var/lib/snapd/snap/motioneye/294
loop1 7:1 0 49.9M 1 loop /var/lib/snapd/snap/snapd/18596
loop2 7:2 0 55.6M 1 loop /var/lib/snapd/snap/core18/2721
sda 8:0 0 477G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 1000M 0 part /boot/efi
├─sda2 8:2 0 1000M 0 part /boot
└─sda3 8:3 0 475G 0 part
  ├─rhel-root 253:0 0 460.1G 0 lvm /
  └─rhel-swap 253:1 0 14.9G 0 lvm [SWAP]

So I only need to run smartctl against sda (/dev/sda) :

╭─x@fuglpige ~
╰─➤ sudo smartctl -H /dev/sda
smartctl 7.1 2019-12-30 r5022 [x86_64-linux-4.18.0-513.18.1.el8_9.x86_64] (local build)

Hello Dan

Thanks for that point, I didn’t know. To be honest I took the approach shared because in that way is indicated in the tutorials, based on partitions. It is the reason about why I used the the Disks GUI to know the partitions.

Let me execute the same command with your suggested approach to share the results later.

Just in case the GSmartControl GUI used, see the first figure shared about that and see the left top - there appears Device: /dev/sda, it is not based on partitions, so I am assuming the results shared later about that tool is valid according your suggestion. If you can check that output, pls share your thoughts

Thanks for your understanding

Ok Here we go

sr0 11:0 1 1024M 0 rom

So you was right about the abstract part:

sda 8:0 0 931.5G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 512M 0 part /boot/efi
└─sda2 8:2 0 931G 0 part /var/snap/firefox/common/host-hunspell

Wondered why appears firefox there …

Therefore

sudo smartctl -H /dev/sda

Because it’s installed as a snap…

Interesting, I assumed it should be installed within a common directory.

Some thoughts about the shared reports?

That is not where it is, that is a mount point for the loop mount
