Why don't more people use Linux?

Thank you! I will

2 varietes of new user

  • want to get something done
  • want to learn

The second might profit from early exposurd to CLI.
Maybe a wave terminal would help

I’m VERY comfortable with the terminal…

However - I see this thing “Wave” has an SSH client - and - it’s CROSS PLATFORM (i.e. Linux, Windows and MacOS).

Last time I raved about a similar thing was Tabby - which I liked - but stopped using 'cause it’s not available “everywhere” - and went back to Gnome Terminal on Linux and iTerm2 on MacOS and MobaXterm on Windows (I only use Windows via RDP to customer servers - to then run a Terminal / SSH session).

Anyway - I might try it out… I saw it said something about the tiny font where you input - if I can’t increase that - then I’ll give up - I need BIG FONTS!

Yeah, me too.
I dont see myself using some fancy terminal that requires me to learn new habits.
It might suit some new users, that is why I mentioned it.

To quote Abhishek
" But there is a population of Linux users for whom the terminal is a scary place. They go there only when it is absolutely necessary and there is no alternative. Like a five-year-old child going to the washroom at night.

And this new terminal should be a comfortable tool for this second type of Linux user. "

By that - I meant to infer - while Tabby has Windows, MacOS and Linux binaries - certain “portals” I’m forced to use for work (RDP / Microsoft Remote Desktop / Azure) don’t have Tabby “published” on the portal. One colleague did try putting Tabby into the AVD (Azure Virtual Desktop) - just for me - but then something happened and someone else came along and removed it.
I REFUSE to use PuTTY because :

  • by default it’s interface is too tiny for me to read
  • interactive challenge based login is a security flaw
  • pageant.exe ssh agent can’t run in background of AVD

and that “published” set of AVD applications does not properly support roaming - i.e. it’s pot luck whether you have the same profile or not

So I end up just using it as an intermediate jumphost and run a full RDP (mstsc.exe) session to some other jumphost endpoint… Once there I can run pageant.exe or MobaXterm…

What I REALLY miss is a VPN client where I can keep that running in the background and use my native terminal app (either Linux or MacOS) and SSH agent to a Linux jumphost over SSH.

That was my thought too. I did take a 10-minute look at it, but I don’t think I’ll be using it.

How Abhishek knew I am here?!:face_with_peeking_eye:

But I prefer not to clutter the system with fancy things and keep the stock OS. To me, when there is the terminal, then there is no point on using another fancy one because ultimately it is a terminal.

Well, there is a difference between terminal emulators.

  • The number of colors available.
  • Perhaps font selection.
  • Selection capabilities.
  • Menu bar.
  • The degree by which it emulates terminals.
  • How much configuration it accepts.
  • Transparent background.
  • Hardware rendering.
  • etc.

Why did most not like DOS, because you had to enter strange commands to get something to work …

From the c prompt
Change directory into wordperfect
Run the program
Remember f1 was help
The f something was bold to switch o.n or off

GUI
Click icon

Thats why, users are generally lazy and want a quick fix

But just in my opinion of client exposure over last 50 years

Me too. I only mentioned it because it may help newbies.

That’s what Windows a.k.a Microsoft did to users… made them (read ‘us’) lazy. Most of the Windows users think, if something can be done with point and click then why do the labour of remembering some commands and execute them? Windows should not exist.

Too strong a idea.

A computer is a tool that is used by different people to carry out different tasks, for some its a work tool so for earning money, for others its a social connection and others its a lifeline. For many older people or handicapped its the link to family or services. So different needs

Like a mobile phone, do we need whatsapp, sms, maps on a telephone, for some yes. Do we need to be connected 24 7 I dont think so but back to user needs.

I have more trouble remembering what to point and click at than remembering CLI commands. There are no manuals to help you with point and click. It is impossible to script what you have done and that is important with system changes. There are no standards like Posix… every DE is different.

There are some cases where a GUI suits… eg I can not imagine you using DR or Gimp with typed commands.

True story - when I started doing desktop support for a large hospital - occasionally I’d get a ticket to look at someone’s PC - I’d go there - and - they’d left it with the blank blue Wordperfect screen - I didn’t have a clue what to do - was worse than the “unable to exit vi” trope - what did I do? I power cycled the piece of crap…
What most people had - back in MS-DOS days - was an IT department deployed DOS menuing system… There were many… I used several…
Then in MS-DOS 6.22 they actually made it possible to run a “native” menuing system from config.sys (e.g. select the best variation of himem.sys etc for playing Doom) then a a menuing system from autoexec.bat… I’ve long forgotten the syntax… But whatever it was - it wasn’t for average users anyway…

I went for an interview at a large hospital in the UK part was a test in lotus 123 which I had been teaching in college, uni, and private companies for over 15 years, no problem. But then they said do you know wordperfect ? Luckily the person before me had left the strip for the function keys so i could cheat and look before i did the session, so please type this, now lets make it bold etc, simple stuff… ideally i was to do 15 mins on each, but they were so impressed with my 123 knowledge they just said forget wordperfect not needed. Lucky again as i had never seen it never mind used it. Also these were in DOS days.

I seem to remember you could get Wordperfect for Unix ( probably SunOS)
I also seem to recall that it wrote its users files in the same folder as the software was held in. … at least in DOS. That makes an unmanageable mess of the filesystem.

In Windows, almost everything is point and click.:smile::smile:

No. It’s impossible I think. But there are keyboard shortcuts or hotkeys which are pretty handy and faster than using only mouse.

That is why I cant use windows. I used to when it had DOS underneath.

Not sure why you would want to or how it would help.

There is a f key that does display codes, cannot remember what but once you select it your nice page is all over the place, but you can make changes like take off bold or put it on.

There are or have been “standards”. We should probably call them conventions instead. After adding feature upon feature all that’s left is to change the interface to make it “prettier”.

I’m kind of tired of the phrase “look and feel”. Almost every single time the look is changed it is touted as a new “look and feel”. Marketing speak.
