S6 belongs to the same family as runit and daemontools and dinit. … they all use a supervisor daemon to make sure the service daemon stays up.
S6 is able to deal with dependencies among services .
If you want to look at init systems, I suggest you try the init-diversity spin which came out of the Antix community
https://antixlinux.com/unofficial-antix-23-init-divesity-spin/
It is available for Antix, Devuan, or MX
I had an extensive play with it
Summary of s6-66 exploration
Introduction
There was a long topic
in which I took a first look at the 66 Service Manager for the S6 init system.
I was fortunate to obtain assistance from
@ProwlerGR – the author of the init diversity spins
@Obarun – the author of the 66 service manager and also creator of the Obarun distro which is Arch Linux with S6-66.
It is time for a summary.
This is a stage summary, not a tutorial.
We are fortunate to have been able to see this important development i…
I just wasted a whole week trying to use the Devuan Refracta installer in virt-manager to do an install of
Devuan-5.0_xfce_init-diversity-edition_amd64_UNOFFICIAL_20240319.iso
It loaded the live system fine, then I could start Refracta installer . It drops you into Gparted to setup partitions. I did what I normally do for VM’s and left it at the default msdos partition table, and I made boot, /, and swap partitions.
It copies all the Linux files to the / and boot partitions, no problem.
I…
This is a summary of what I found in the rather longwinded topic
I would welcome any corrections and questions.
It was prepared offline with markdown
Some things I have learnt about s6 init system with s6-rc service manager
This is not a tutorial.
I am a long way from mastering s6-rc, and I have only progressed as far as I
have demonstrated here with generous assistance from @ProwlerGr
S6 on its own is an init system, and a supervisor system for services. That is it starts services when…

Thats enough
It was good for me. I was able to learn S6 with s6-rc or s6-66 service managers.
The 66 service manager is very new, and I was lucky to get some help from the developer. I went on to try Obarun Linux which is the 66 devrlopers own distro.
Getting started with Obarun and s6 with 66
The only official released distro which has S6 with the 66
Service Manager is Obarun. The init diversity spins
( Antix, MX, Devuan) have it but they are spins, ie trial systems not official releases. Void has S6 and 66 available as packages but the versions are old.
The name ‘Obarun’ comes from ‘OpenBox Arch RUNit’. ‘66’ was originally developed for Runit, then changed to S6.
Obarun is based on Arch. There are two downloads available here
https:/…
Dont jump into Obarun unprepared… Learn s6 and 66 first with one of the spins.
I still have to look at dinit. It seems to be ’ runit with dependencies’ … bit as sophisticsted as S6.
I think S6 can do anything systemd can do , without all the branching out into other parts of the system . If something is going to replace systemd, S6 would be the best contender at the moment.
