You like hard choices, Bonne courage
@cat-man can run the live image of Garuda Linux, but is unable to succeed installation with the graphical installer. I’m unsure if there’s even a way to complete installation from the CLI, so I too wish him luck, with respect for his tenacity for trying to get Garuda installed.
Ernie
The most likely cause is that he is not specifying the partitioning properly.
This sounds more trouble trying to get an Arch based distro installed - than just going Arch on its own…
When i click install garuda im not giving the chance to specify what disk to use so i have no means to change it,not to my knowledge.
What?
You must be able to specify a partition and how to format it and where to mount it?
It is the Calamares installer… you have probably used it with other distros.
Here is what the Garuda install instructions say
" * PARTITIONS
- If you don’t care, choose “Erase Disk”. This is recommended if you want to use Garuda as the main OS.
- If you want to dual boot with an existing OS, select “install alongside”. You can then select a partition to be resized in the partition view at the bottom of the page.
- If you care, select “Manual Partitioning”. A partitioning/mounts editor will be available later in the setup process. Only use this if you know what you are doing. The previous 2 options should be sufficient in the vast majority of cases."
You need to look more carefully
you see the picture of the grub meny i click on install garuda and then the iso file is start loading the rest what happends you see on the other pictures,it loads over 6 min i never given the chance to specify what disk to use i never come that far
You mean the Welcome to Garuda picture in reply 12 ?
There is no Install option there?
It seems to load the live system ?
I think most likely you need to load the live systdm first, then find an Install icon in the live system screen.
We are back to this question … is it failing to load the live system?
ok but what does it mean in the same picture boot with nvidia drivers then its when i click that one it loads over 6 min
That possibility hadn’t occurred to me. Because I dual-boot, I always choose manual partitioning.
Ernie
Ditto what @nevj recommended!
Ernie
It means load the live system with nvidia drivers
6 mins is long … and it is failing … it is not an install it is an attempt to load the live system .
It seems the live system cant run on your computer … so there is no hope of getting to an install. We have to,find out why the live system will not run?
The last picture tells you what arguments you need to edit into the grub boot sequence to fix it
So , back to fhe grub menu, use ‘e’, and edit the grub boot sequence.
Then the live system will boot. Then you will get an Install icon on the live system screen.
Given the number of interactions i go back to my original question why this version of linux ?
Then ask if our site is the right place to ask the question or would it be better aimed at the supplier of this version, not that I doubt the technical expertise fellow members have, but perhaps there is an underlying fault that needs to be address.
Yes, @cat-man seems to be focusing on flashy looking distros like Cachyos and Garuda, that stylize their wallpaper but neglect to make the basics like bootability work properly.
I prefer KISS… keep it stupidly simple if I wanted flashy would go to the disco.
If Garuda cant produce an iso that boots to a live linux on any 64bit system, they are very low down on my list of desirable distros.
I’m gonna ask a dumb question - but - you’re not using Ventoy are you? I seem to remember another reply elsewhere where you’d stated you weren’t going to use Ventoy again and go back to Balena Etcher - is that right?
I’ve seen strange things happen when booting a live ISO off Ventoy and those inconsistencies drove me away from Ventoy…
Nowdays when I want to check out a different distro with a DE than my daily driver - I use KVM/QEMU and virt-manager - having said that - my main guest VMs that I run are usually headless servers so I can learn more shit about later RHEL and OEL versions that I support for my job…
I really can’t be arsed dual booting or distro hopping… it’s tiresome and gets in the way of having fun (which is a far cry from my introduction to Linux 30+ years ago - where messing about with configs and compiling shit was the “having fun” part
- i.e. the fun part was when the kids were yelling “are we there yet?” - I just wanna get there these days)
Well I would not use either of those.
dd is the only reliable usb maker.
All the others try to second guess what you want and make mistakes in doing so. dd will always give you an exact copy of the iso file.
You are right, I quit using Ventoy awhile back, I now use Rufus, for my usb, if I boot with a usb!!
That is why I am using Slackware15 to boot my Dell Inspiron 530, just because it has a GeForce GT8500 Nvidia, that needs a 5-15 kernel to use the nouveau driver!!
